shotgun vs rifle for home defense

In the end, the deciding factor for me personally is my environment. I live in a thin walled apartment with people, including family, all around me. The .223 has more penetrating power than the 12 gauge shotgun load I use. How much more is up for debate, but we know the two weapons are two...

    Good source to purchase M1A?

Hey buzzbox-- I'm not familiar with those web sites. Care to link for those of us who've never been? Thanks a bunch in advance.

    Glasses with Safety Glasses

You know, for all intents and purposes I keep a couple packs of disposable contact lenses on hand for shoot trips. I too am bespectacled (terribly nearsighted, terribly). For most everyday purposes I wear the glasses, and if I go to the range I put in the contacts and then just wear my safety...

Colbert Report & irritating anti-gun content...

I actually thought it was funny. Considering it was obvious parody, after all. Not only that, but in pointing out the dregs of society, I think it should garner a fair deal of thought on our side. I mean these "quote-quote" experts will sometimes try and represent us. We need to, contrary to...

Gun Test: "If matters got that bad".

I'm a strong proprietor of the "social network", like you describe. Having ranch hands, people who are mechanical and tech savvy, people who are nurses or doctors, HAM radio operators and people of all professions in a network or neighborhood is about the wisest thing one can do. I mean...

    Frustrating Conversation with my roommates

I think it's definitely worth wasting your time. I talk to anyone and everyone who has an opinion on guns, and I will tell them flat out the God's honest truth as I see it. I've gotten a few people closer to understanding the 2A and what it stands for. I mean I understand your frustration but...

Good article about the Biden comment from a few months ago

I'm glad to see this article. I come from a long line of Democrats, coming from a Scots-Irish family of migrant workers, farmers and sharecroppers who traveled from Arkansas to California post-Dust Bowl. My grandfathers of at least 3 generations were Democratic voters, and all of them were...

VID: Kid shoots himself with a Full-Auto Glock.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhIJOVD8hwY Truly funny video of an accidental discharge. No gore or blood.

VID: Kid shoots himself with a Full-Auto Glock.

You can clearly hear "Did you get shot?" then "...Yeah..." I feel bad for him but damn if it's not stupid to have a grip like that attached where your hand is out so close to the muzzle. Seems in fact as if part of his hand extends past the muzzle. In hindsight I bet they feel stupid.

M1A -- SOCOM/Scout models vs. Standard length in terms of accuracy

Are the M1A's with the longer barrels (standard models) marginally or considerably more accurate/long range than the scout and SOCOM models with the shorter barrels? What are the max effective ranges of each type?

    Best inexpensive .308 soft point?

About 8 dollars a box for Barnaul .308 SP Russian made. It's not bad. Barnaul also makes the "Bear" line of ammo which I find to be of spectacular and rugged quality for general shooting. Specifically their Silver Bear, if you can find it. It seems to have dried up in .308 but it's not...

    mosin nagant rail system?

Not commercially available, and from my first impression it doesn't seem to present a lot of use. It would be too unstable of a platform to reliably mount optics... The only thing I could think of you doing would be to add a flashlight or something. Doesn't seem like it's worth all the work in...

M-4 or AK 47 for Home Defense

AK-47 wouldn't be a bad gun to have tucked away somewhere. 7.62x39 SP ammo isn't too hard to come by.

    Mosin ammo question

Looks like you've got yourself some Bulgarian surplus 185 gr. heavy ball ammunition. The codes 10 and 55 on the brass with the yellow-tipped bullet leads me to believe this almost without a doubt. Definitely check out 7.62x54r.net's ammunition evaluations. It's a great way to identify ammo if...

Why Did America Win the Race for a Semi-Automatic Infantry Rifle?

The subject of Hitler is also a great point! Hitler was a complete sociopath with a lot of strange, self righteous idealisms. In fact the Stg. 44 which was the world's first assault rifle and probably the most revolutionary firearm of all time, almost never was. As I recall seeing in a...

Why Did America Win the Race for a Semi-Automatic Infantry Rifle?

Not only did we have great industrial capacity, I believe we perfected the design in that era, and continued to perfect it. The French and German semi-automatic rifles we look back on now were near-blunders. Certainly revolutionary in their time, but far from perfected. Still abstract, with many...

    Long range shooting

If you're any good at shooting, the 700P is more than accurate. It's not always about having the latest and greatest, most top of the line equipment. Our American forefathers beat the British Empire's brand new Brown Bess muskets with broken old hand-me-downs on more than one occasion. The 700P...

Typical self defense shooting distances ?

I too have heard the 0-5 kind of number. I have heard 15 yards is the maximum with plenty of forgiveness for obscure or unlikely situations.

    SS109 for Home Defense

I say replace them with soft points and he's in good shape. The soft points are better ballistically (IMHO) in close range and are less likely to over penetrate. They will mushroom in the bad guy's flesh and cause more damage than a steel penetrating round (complete over penetration will rely on...
