What revolver do you use for home defense?

The little lady keeps a 7 shot GP100 under her pillow. I keep a 45ACP with a 10 round Wilson Combat mag and TLR1-HL on the night stand, and a 300Blackout pistol just below it.

Does your carry rig change with the seasons?

I absolutely cannot print where I need to go. What I carry is based on how I dress. I carry a CZ P01 in an Alien Gear holster in cooler months when I can easily wear something to conceal it. Warmer months when I'm dressed in lightweight dress slacks and a Polo, I'm carrying a P365 IWB in a...

    New Super Blackhawk

I've been thinking of a Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter in 41 Magnum. I can't get it out of my head. I don't really need it, and I've never even fired one, but it beckons to me.

Ultimate 357 magnum revolver if you were going to have ONE?

S&W-Keeper 38? Wow! I only have 5, and I thought I had one for each occasion. You must have more occasions than me, but I'm working on it. My favorite is the GP100 my wife keeps under her pillow. I hope she leaves it to me in her will when she goes, because it has a buttery trigger in single...

    What Do You Carry?

I only pocket carry when I absolutely cannot carry my P365 IWB. Then it's either an LCR or an LCP2 in a Sticky holster. Sam

    Ruger LCP 2 .380 Recoil?

It's a little snappy, but it's not that bad. If you carry it, you have to shoot it enough to know it eats what you feed it and you can hit what you aim at, then put it away. For me, it's a LOT more comfortable to shoot than my 38+P LCR with +P ammo. That's no fun at all!

    Best reloading manual

Reloading data from powder manufacturers is free. Manuals from the bullet makers are not, but they are usually your best bet. Every bullet maker uses a different alloy in their gilding metal, and different bullet brands have different bearing surface lengths in the same weight bullet. These...

    300win VS 7mm mag

Depends on what you are hunting. A 7mmRem Mag shooting 150gr bullets ands a 300WinMag shooting 180gr bullets have about the same sectional density. You couldn't tell the difference in trajectory at 400 yards, and wind drift is about the same. If you are hunting elk at long range, I would use...

Marlin Double Safety on Lever Gun

I've got lever guns with and without the crossbolt safeties. I've heard too many lever guns go off just before light when hunting. It was usually due to an accidental discharge when loading (or unloading) with cold hands and gloved fingers. After all, you can't load or unload a levergun...

    Dipper Calculation-Surely I'm Wrong?

Low Budget Shooter, Until purchasing a nice set of scales is in the budget, you can calibrate your dippers on somebody else's scales and continue to use the dippers with confidence.

    Optimum Rifle COAL

I always seat bullets out as far as my magazine will allow when working up loads. Once I find the magic load, I fine tune by incrementally seating deeper until I find the sweet spot. Your rifle will tell you when.

.300 win mag -vs- 7mm Rem Mag

My dad and I went through this back in 1969. Dad built a 300WinMag and I built a 7mmRemMag. We went elk hunting and both killed elk. As for deer hunting, the 7mmRemMag got used a whole lot more. A 300 is a lot of gun for deer hunting. If your rifle is used mostly for game bigger than deer...

    Taming .300 Win Mag recoil???

You can load a 300WinMag down to 30-06 levels, but recoil will still be higher. With rifles weighing the same, and bullets weighing the same, both cartridges would have the same recoil if they both used the same amount of powder. But they don't! The 300 WinMag uses more of the same powder...

    Barrel Break-In Recommendations

An excerpt from Dan Lilja: "It is important to break-in a barrel though. The jacket material must be removed after every shot during the initial few rounds. If this isn't done the areas of the barrel that fouled will tend to pick up more fouling and it will build on itself. It is important to...

What's the most durable, widely available gun finish?

Most durable and widely available are two different things. There are no baked-on, spray-on finishes that are as durable as metal. NONE! Hard chrome and electroless nickel are the toughest finishes. NP3 is a surface treatment for steel and metal alloys that combines sub-micron particles of...

    30/30 not enough?

Most of my rifles are custom. However, you will be happy to know that 90% or more of the deer I've taken in the last 44 years could just as easily been taken with a 30-30, and it's entirely possible that they would have been just as dead!

    primer color coding

Not only do I note all reloading data on the box, I mark every cartridge case I load with a Sharpie for bullet and powder charge, and I use a red Sharpie to color magnum primers. Sometimes the markings on the side of a brass case come off, but the primer will still be red and I know what the...
