Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide?

The stats are meaningless without controlling for demographics, poverty, and all sorts of other factors. Controlling for demographics, the U.S. has a murder rate much more in line with some European countries.

Thoughts on my 100 yard grouping with Ruger 10/22

One thing I definitely want to invest in is a new stock. The factory stock is just too small for me to comfortably shoulder it and look down the scope. Most of the good stocks I have seen require a bull barrel. The combos run into couple hundreds of dollars, anyone have any suggestions on...

People trying to "look cool" with their setups?

I think the thing that set off my eye-rolling was a comment a group of tacticool guys made to me at the range. They saw my stock Ruger 10/22 and laughed and made some comments. The gist was "haha so funny that someone would use one of OUR cool banana style magazines in that simple old wooden...

People trying to "look cool" with their setups?

Is that sarcasm :-/ I'm not discounting people who are true collectors or super experienced shooters. But these are people who don't really look like they know much more than the 14 year old girl learning to shoot with her dad! Doesn't it make sense to start with a beginner setup until you...

People trying to "look cool" with their setups?

I notice this a lot when I go to the range. People with no real marksmanship skill or military experience shooting expensive guns with all kinds of cool-looking accessories. Example: I recently saw a group of guys with a desert-camo AR with holo sights, foregrips, collapsible stock, the works...

Thoughts on my 100 yard grouping with Ruger 10/22

I agree .22lr is pretty limited by design, but I have seen youtube videos where people consistently put holes on paper with a ruger 10/22 at 400 yards! I think that is true marksmanship, and much more challenging than doing something like that with a more expensive, high-caliber rifle.

Would high-end ammo make a difference? edit: just saw response above - thanks!

Thoughts on my 100 yard grouping with Ruger 10/22

This was with a BSA 3-9 * 40mm .22 scope, from 100 yards at outdoor range. I was using the full 9 magnification. I have horrible visual acuity so using the stock iron sights from that distance is out of the question for me. Everything but the scope is stock on the ruger, except the first 25...

Plannin on hiking next weekend @ national forest...CCW now?

When does the new rule go into place allowing concealed carry permit holders to hike in National Parks, so long as they are in a state where their permit is valid? Also, does it apply to National Forests?

Tried out my new Ruger 10/22....please give me feedback (pics included)

I think a 3x9 scope is going to give a MUCH clearer sight picture than the stock sights do. At least I hope so! I mean with the iron sights there's only so much inherent accuracy available sine the front bead effectively obscures a huge portion of the target at 25 yards. So it's not really a...

Tried out my new Ruger 10/22....please give me feedback (pics included)

I took it out and fired 50 rounds into a small target from 25 yards. I used the iron sights that came with the rifle. I used winchester super X ammo. A few shots were from a standing position but most were from a sitting position. That's a standard-sized pen for reference. I'm kind of...

What the heck is a "Bowie knife" under TX law? Is this knife legal?

Thanks for all the help, guys. My gf just picked up the knife for me from bass pro shop (Xmas!) but I won't get to open it until later this evening when we exchange gifts. I'm not planning on carrying it around for anything other than camping/fishing/hiking, but you never know when some...

What the heck is a "Bowie knife" under TX law? Is this knife legal?

Okay so I decided on a buck pathfinder 105 fixed blade knife for my general camping/outdoors knife. It has a 5" blade so it does not exceed the 5.5" limit under TX law. Here's a link to the knife: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d.html/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/189-1570669-4578568?a=B000EI0VT8...

Is there a compact version of the Buck 119 fixed blade special?

Thanks all. I actually tried out the woodsman yesterday after it was suggested. It really is like a mini 119. I think its a bit small for my purposes (I need a good all around heavy duty camp knife that perhaps could double for fishing). The 105 seems like it would be perfect! Does wal mart...

Is there a compact version of the Buck 119 fixed blade special?

The normal 119 has a 6 inch blade. Is there a smaller version out there, I need a good camping/fishing knife.

Novice question: why don't cops wear full body armor?

I know batman-like armor (lightweight, flexible and covers the whole body yet can stop a rifle round) is years in the future, but it seems feasible to wear jointed Kevlar over arms and legs as well as torso, as well as a bullet resistant helmet to protect the head. Is it just too cost...

Got a glock 26...do I still need my 17? Should I sell it?

So I wasn't really sure which section to post this in. I'm in Texas and legally carry concealed...17 was too bulky for carry in our warm weather, so I got a 26 which is very concealable. However I'm not sure whether I should part with my 17 or not. Should I relegate it to the nightstand or...

U.S. Senate overwhelmingly votes to allow Nat'l Park Concealed Carry

Senate votes to allow licensed handgun carry in national parks: Sixty-seven Senators voted for the Coburn amendment, which says that persons can carry firearms in national parks and wildlife refuges to the same extent that they are allowed to carry by state law. All Republicans except Alexander...

Why You Must Know Your Target... Even In Texas

This is not "armchair quarterbacking" or anything....IT IS INSANE, IMMORAL, AND SUPREMELY IDIOTIC to shoot somebody MERELY for trespassing. These people should be severely punished. Note the "merely." EVEN IF you are protected by law, the odds of making a mistake are simply too high, not to...

    Where's the Correct Balance?

The line between preparedness and paranoia has NOTHING to do with "how often you wear a gun/lock your doors, etc." Just like a seatbelt, those are things a person who is responsible always, everyday does. It'd be dumb not to wear a gun just because you're "going to the post office" or...
