Not so. That's like saying that if clothes from Walmart were as good as Tommy Hilfiger or (insert top fashion designer's name here) the top fashion designers would be out of business. The marketing of certain styles of optics and name-brands are similar to the marketing of other products; Barska...
Not bad at all. My Savage 110 bruises my arm after 20 shots, but I can shoot the T-53 for more like 50 shots before I want to set it down and take a rest.
Being a target shooter, I prefer the SKS, but it's not due to better accuracy; it's due to the last shot bolt hold open feature and ease of access to the loading/ejection port. The trigger is better on the AK.
I was wondering the exact same thing (.22LR for HD). I came up with the following:
I like rifles best in most all situations. If .22LR was my caliber, a 10/22 with a red-dot or green-dot sight and a weapon light would be best. Also a 30 round mag would have to be available.
No one would choose an SKS and a bandolier full of loaded stripper clips? Probably a good choice on a south pacific island, as long as I had a machette, a fire-starter, and my Swiss Army knife...
Hope I end up in Bora-Bora! :D
I have all three: SKS, AK (MAK90), and an AR-15 A2 and M4.
For plinking and hunting, I don't see how the SKS could take second seat to any of the others. It's a good reliable rifle that's accurate enough to do most jobs.
For the SHTF problem, either the AK or AR would better due to...
I'd recommend a Lee-Enfield #1 Mk III or #4 Mk II in keeping with the WWII theme, or try and find an American military rifle at a decent price, i.e., M1 Carbine or M1 Rifle.
I'm a cheap scope user. I have several chinese manufactured scopes (NCStar or Red Star) that work quite well, and didn't break the bank. That said, they aren't quite as clear as my Simmons or Bushnell scopes, but I can still hit with them quite well at 100+ meters. I live in South Carolina and...
One of the SKS "paratrooper" carbines with an ATI folding stock from Cabela's would be an option, if you can find the shorty SKS at a reasonable price. Add a red-dot sight on a rear dust cover mount if you like. More punch than the M1 Carbine.
I've been wanting a slick bore "rifle" for a while now, something with sights and a good fit on a .530 or larger ball with the proper patch. My Hawken rifle is one of the italian made rifles from Cabela's. Does anyone make a smooth bore barrel for these?
Air mortar?
I was watching Myth Busters on DSC one night and came up with this idea:
Take the proper size schedule 40 PVC pipe and cut two equal length sections, then put a cap on one end of one of the tubes. Then put a 1/4 turn ball valve in the middle of the two tubes and a air valve on...
I've got a unaltered Russian SKS. I've shot it at 300 yards, and it's a good 4 MOA shooter with Wolf hollow point ammo. I shot a 275 out of 500 with it in a NRA high-power competition. Sight in was 25 yards prior to the competition; the 200m setting on the sight leaf was on target, but the 300m...
I've got a cheap Chinese airgun, and I get the best groups with the Crossman pellets. I think they're softer pellets than chinese/RWS/Daisy pellets. They also shoot to point of aim in my rifle with the iron sights. I don't have a 3/8" scope rail on this air rifle, so I haven't been able to mount...
The .303 has a bullet diameter of .311 and the .308 diameter bullets will fit down the barrel when loaded into the .303 British cartridge. Is .003" enough difference in a rifle barrel to cause problems? I'd never try the .311 in the .308, but the smaller bullet might work in the larger bore...
I've got limited funding (don't we all? :( ) and I want to mount a red-dot and a forward vertical grip on my Chinese MAK-90. I'm looking at getting the forward grip here:

Add to this a Simmons 30mm red-dot sight from either Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops...
M1 Carbine, without a doubt. Light weight, easy to support in any position. For longer ranges, either the M1 Rifle (#1 on the long range list) or my M91/30.
The mount you linked to (the $275 one) has a trailer-park cousin available for $60:

It appears to have the same features at a much lower price. :)
I've been thinking about doing this on my Savage 110's plastic stock (if I don't just replace it). Do I need to use a primer for the paint to stick to the plastic?
