    S&W model 60 -vs- Ruger SP101 357 mag.

It's good to hear more about why you're interested. I own a 2" SP101 in .357, and have shot both 2" and 5" Smith j-frames. The recoil is barely less noticeable with the Ruger, but the Smith conceals a little better. My experience is that the SP101 is easier to use with speed loaders than the...

First revolver, what to look for?

For range & HD use, I'd suggest something with these features: - steel frame - 4" barrel - full grip - adjustable sights There's no point in shooting an ultralight revolver with a stubby barrel if you don't plan on carrying it all the time. Used, there's the Ruger GP100, S&W 686, or...

How many conceal carry 4 inch med. frame revolvers on a regular basis?

The closest I've come is openly carrying a 4" Colt Python or Smith 629 for up to a week at a time while hiking. With a good holster you do get used to the weight & bulk, but you never forget that you're packing. My own opinion is that a 4" medium revolver is a bit big for daily wear. I think...

Please Ruger make some wood LCR Grips!

The closest I've seen is Charter Arms' Police Undercover in .38. And I think Rossi makes a small-framed sixshooter in .357. Neither have the light weight or modern look of the LCR, though. I'm surprised hardly anyone makes wood grips for the LCR; it's one of the only reasons I have a SP101...

    Does anyone make a J-frame .44 special?

As others have mentioned, there's Charter Arms' Bulldog. ("J-frame" is the name Smith & Wesson uses for their current small-framed revolvers.) If S&W is what you're familiar with, the Bulldog frame is between the sizes of a J and K frame. It's sort of like a J-frame with a fatter cylinder...

    Charter Arms Bulldog

If it's for a hunting sidearm, you might consider getting their 4" target model, or wait a little while for their 5" model to come out. The muzzle energy's better, and you don't have to worry about concealing such a long barrel when you're out in the woods. Plus it's still a lightweight gun.

    What revolvers are good?

My "dream list" revolver is a Smith & Wesson model 627 or 327, which might be worth looking at. They hold 8 rounds of .357 magnum, which is about as much firepower as you can pack into a defensive revolver. They make it with 5" and snub barrels, and also with steel or lightweight scandium...

This is what I am looking for in a Revolver

I've been thinking of buying "one revolver for all purposes" myself. My criteria are different from yours, but two guns you might consider are the 3" GP100 or the Bulldog. (Charter will be doing a new run of their classic 3" blued model, and it will be interesting to see if their quality...

    .38 Special defensive ammo?

I use handloads or whatever's cheap for 90% of my shooting, but my defensive ammo is Cor-Bon .38+p DPX.

    Is Charter Arms any good?

No direct experience, but my town's firechief liked an older model as his daily carry gun. I hear the current ownership builds guns that are about as good as the originals. You might want to snatch up that 5" model soon if you have a hankering for it; I wouldn't be surprised if they went back...

    Toughest Big Bore Jacketed Bullets

I prefer hardcast to jacketed bullets if deep penetration is what's wanted. I like Cor-bon. Buffalo Bore also has an excellent reputation, and I believe they both carry .41mag. Other brands I've heard of, but not tried, are Garret and Double Tap.

    Ruger LCR or Ruger SP101

I own a 2" SP101 and a S&W model 642, which is about the same size & weight as a .357 LCR. The 642 only fires .38 special, and its recoil is pretty lively. I think firing magnums out of a gun that light would be quite unpleasant. It sounds like you want a do-it-all gun. I'd suggest a 3" SP101...

.22 mag revolver for feral dogs

We used to come across packs of feral dogs while out hiking when I grew up. I don't know about .22 mag, but a .38 revolver has plenty of firepower; we're not talking about fending off meth heads here. It only took one bullet to drop a dog the one time Dad had to shoot, and the rest of the pack...

5" Bulldog... has anybody seen one?

I was browsing different gunmaker websites tonight for fun, and noticed that Charter Arms now offers many of their guns with a long, 5" barrel. They don't have any pictures up yet. Has anybody seen one? Looks like they've also dropped their .327 federal lineup. I wasn't sure if that cartridge...

    CCW Non Snubbie

To be a little different, you could consider a 3 or 4" Charter Arms Bulldog. They're kind of uncommon and pack about the same wallup as .45acp.

    s&w vs Charter vs ruger

Revolvers from Charter Arms that are new, or old but in good condition (1980's), are usually OK shooters. Not pretty, but they're a good choice if you're on a budget. Most have decent accuracy. They have a good warrantee. The Ruger LCR is relatively new to the market, but they have a nice...

    22LR compact?

My impression of Charter Arms is that they're about the same quality as Taurus, except they're made in USA. I've not shot one, but from what I hear they tend to be quite accurate for the price. They have an excellent warrantee and have girly grips available...

    Kit Guns, what for?

I've only seen kit guns used for plinking at camp or for finishing off large fish. If you're already carrying a large caliber hunting rifle, a kit gun makes more sense as a sidearm than something in .357 or larger because it allows you to take small game more efficiently. Arguably, you could...

J-frame Technique Advice - Wrist Control

I recommend this also. I do it while using quality snap caps. It builds finger strength, improves trigger control, and (in the case of my Ruger) helps smooth out a new trigger action. I too have large hands, and the Compacs are the best compromise I've found for concealable size vs. comfort.

    revolver for a lifetime

I have a DAO SP101 that I bought when their quality seemed a little better, and it may very well stick around for the rest of my life. I haven't even stuck on fancy grips, so I haven't gotten around to taking a picture yet. If I didn't have that, a 3" model 60 or a Charter Police Undercover...
