270 Caliber (which Brand of Ammo?)

one to consider Without going out and looking up barrel twist rates, I would recomend you try 2 things. Get a box of 130's, and a box of 150's, and just see how they group. I had a remington 760 pump that i couldnt have hit an elephant at 50 yards with 130's, but would shoot 1.5 inch groups...

    Deer Rounds

my 2 cents I don't see a big problem with killing deer with 22 caliber bullets. Its 2008, the availability of premium bullets in all calibers for every situation is there. While i haven't specifically seen the 223 in action on deer, i have seen a pile of them drop to 22-250's and 220...

    .308 more than 30-06?

Wally world My guess would be walmart ordered 10000 of them in 06 and got a price reduction, but has to order a single one in 308............

    Buying Savage 110: 25-06, 30-06, 300WSM, 7mm Rem Mag, or .308?

25 06 I bought a 25-06 for my wife to use on elk this year here in MT, and it is plenty of gun. 120 gr remington core lokt factory fodder for it accounted for her 2 deer, my 3 deer, and 1 elk thus far. As far as a gun for the west, so long as you can handle the recoil and shoot it...

    300 Savage did the job!

Nice Job! That gun is making me really miss my 99 in 250-3000, I must have been out of my mind for selling it 5 years ago...... Congrats, nothing like taking a trophy animal without the latest trophy rifle :)

Selecting a rifle, need a point of reference...

Guess it depends on what you want to do with this rifle? if it is a big game gun, the 270 is as all purpose as they come. if you just want to punch paper, 308 or 223 that you can get surplus military ammo for at a lower cost might be a consideration to factor in.

    My first elk

Nice slab of meat there! Congrats 270 is plety of rifle for elk, i killed my first 5 with one, farthest any went was about 80 yards straight down hill, but dead when it finally went over. Still waiting for the opportunity to test out the new 25-06 on a cow this year and see if it is...

I need some advice on bagging this monster - pic attached

Mulies are really getting hot in the rut right now along with the white tails here in Mt. I am sitting 50 miles north of you right now by your desriptions. that said, with teh rut on, that buck might be chasing a doe 20 miles away right now, or he might be 50 feet from where you missed, its a...

    deer rifle question

When i lived back in PA, we had an enclosed lockable porch on our hunting camp that had enough rack space for 20 guns. Always left the guns out there to avoid the sweat issue. that said, truck would be good too IMO. I actually still keep my rifle in the garage during hunting season for the...

    Cheap Montana Deer Hunting

proof positive women in MT are tougher than most men in the cities! Actually heard that one on my way to work this morning, im sitting 25 miles from the "scene of the assault" right now. Sunday is the opener for general elk and deer, have a funny feeling that one might be in a freezer veryyyy...

    Does Anybody Hunt on Horseback?

No better way to hunt the back country than with good stock. But leave the shooting off the critters for hollywood. As mentioned eearlier, that muzzle blast is rough on a critter, i wouldn't intentionally muzzle blast my hunting partner, be it 2 legged or 4 legged. If you have never broke a...

    I Hate ATVs

gotta really watch that misuse of women, more dangerous than a gun IMO. How come we dont have a husbands safety course available anyhow? Yall married hunters know what im talkin about, one of them wife wimmens go off half cocked and ya got better odds of surviving a fight with a sow...

    OOOOH That smell

When i was outfitting, one old guide made the ultimate quote that i live by today. "The wind is in yer favor, or it aint, and aint nutten gonna fix that" Pretty sure its dead on accurate too, least here. Only place i could see any need for scent reduction would be in a tree with a bow...

Just wondering about some opinions.... Do you guys Consider...

hobby with a benefit I always looked at the meat as a very good side benefit of the hobby. Go golfing and spend as much or mor ethan i do in a day of hunting, and come home with nothing? As for health, i would say 95% of my daughters red meat consumption since birth has been game, elk...

    Second Deer Rifle Time......

hmmm I would have to say get a 7mm ultra mag, sit in the middle of the farm and shoot the whole place :) Seriously tho, the 110's are really hard to beat for the money when it comes to accuracy, and in 243/257/25-06/260/270, are way more gun than most eastern deer hunters would ever need...

    Rifle for my girlfriend

well well, could get her a 50 bmg in a 12 lb gun and just be done with the dating scene and save the pain of div... n/m, im old and jaded :) (but happily remarried, im a slow learner) all things considered, if you are on a tight budget for the foreseable future, it is hard to beat a 22, 11...

    Computer-generated camo for deer

Really like some of the posts made, bottom line is $2000 in camo isn't going to make you a successful hunter. Plain old hard work in scouting, gaining experience through trial and error will however improve your odds considerably. I do use camo when bow hunting like the rest of the world...

    your favorite deer rifle/caliber?

hmmm Being as I have elk and bear as well as deer tags, the old butt ugly rem 700 adl in 7mm rem mag is the one that always seems to go when its time to fill the freezer, kills them all with 150 gr spitzers nicely.
