    Good Range Piece

Go Swiss! Get a P210, preferably the heavy frame. Favourite gun here in Sweden.

    Springfield 1842 smoothbore musket

So, the breech plug came out today. Without heat. Now I'm going to order a mould or blocks and cast some big balls and shoot this beast in a while.

    Springfield 1842 smoothbore musket

Oh, the breech plug is marked 1846, and the lock 1853. Some kind of battlefield mismatch perhaps?

    Springfield 1842 smoothbore musket

kBob Nope, there is no rear sight on this gun. Well, I clearly wrote earlier that a new barrel is a restricted part. If I wanted to shoot a modern gun, I'd buy a replica which also require a license. Do you have any antiques like my 1842? I'll bet it's really nice weather in Florida right...

    Springfield 1842 smoothbore musket

I guess we'll know how it works after I've fired it and upload it on youtube. The barrel looks very lightly spotted, and ok at the breech.

    Springfield 1842 smoothbore musket

It's not loaded, first thing I checked when I opened the package! I'm going to use a penetrating oil first for a while, and try after that. Overall the gun looks very crisp. Used a propane torch to loosen the nipple five minutes ago, so the plug may also come loose with some preparation I hope...

    Springfield 1842 smoothbore musket

Thanks for your advice guys. I'm not exactly new to bp after four years of shooting. A new barrel a restricted part, might as well buy a repro gun then. If it is as sound as it looks, it will be shot.

    Springfield 1842 smoothbore musket

Ok, sounds good. DGW has set of blocks in .662, so I guess I will get a set of those. Only thing to do before shooting is to get the breech plug and nipple out. I bought this gun from antiqueguns.com.

    Remington 1858 shot

I tried out an original ´58 I've had laying around for about three years, for the first time a couple days ago. I used a .457 ball and they didn't shave a ring, felt a bit too small. But replicas are tighter I guess?

    443 ft-lbs for a brass rem58 8" barrel. Am I crazy?

I reached 1200 fps with an original '58 fully loaded with Pyrodex P and a .457 ball a while back. So clearly it's possible. But those loads puts a lot of wear on a nice old gun - not something I'd do on a regular basis.

    THR Remington 1858 Club

ZVP, I poured a chamber full and emptied it into my powder measure. Looks like tad more than 45 grains? regards.

    THR Remington 1858 Club

hey zvp, Handgun hunting is forbidden here in Sweden. Why? I was curious how it would perform with a chamber full of pyro p. And 3 shots gave similar readings, 1179, 1201, 1208 fps. My target load is a charge thrown from my flask, about 25grs. And it does fine using that load.

    THR Remington 1858 Club

Hellgate, you're welcome. It was a great day at the range, and a really boring task cleaning up the gun when I got home. When the pyrodex is gone, I'm going to start using real black powder exclusively. A big difference in the fouling... Oh, what performance do you guys get with a full load...
