G17.Reliability is paramount in a carry pistol.My G17 has an oustanding record of reliabiltiy.It is combat accurate in my hands and then some.17+1 rounds is usually sufficient.For me, its easy to carry with the right belt and holster.
If the question is for someone in NYC, then mag capacity will be limited to 10 or under.This being the case, I'd go for a single stack pistol.Sig Sauer P220 or 1911 style in .45ACP.
No experience here with the .40S&W model.But my P99 in 9x19mm has been excellent in regards to accuracy, reliability, ergonomics, and overall performance.
