    Scope for .44 magnum

Hello. What are a few good choices for adding a scope to my .44? (S&W Model 29, 6.5" bbl.)

    Using shot in a revolver

Hello. What can you gentlemen tell me about loading shot shells for a .44 magnum? The other day I was thinking that something like a dozen or so BBs in front of an appropriate powder charge would be useful for nuisance birds like European Starlings.

    .44 Magnum question

I shoot Berry's 220gr flatpoints for target shooting with my S&W M29 6.5". My usual load is 9gr. of W231. Looking at this data from Winchester (maximum loads in both cases: 220 GR. BERB FP GRS. 9.4 VEL.(FT/S) 1104 PRESS. 20,700 PSI 225 GR. SPR JHP GRS. 11.0 VEL.(FT/S) 1344 PRESS. 38,200 CUP I...

    Blanks

Hello, Who knows anything about loading blanks (for .44 magnum)? For various reasons (like scaring the deer out of my garden) I'd like to be able to make a loud noise without launching a projectile. Do I just load a case with some powder (say, 5 gr of 231) and put a construction paper wad over...

Oops. (Do I have a problem?)

Loading .45 ACP, 5gr 231 over 230gr. round nose, new Starline brass, CCI large pistol primers. I finished of a box of 100 primers and opened another one. Guess the right hand didn't know what the left hand was doing; I just noticed I opened a box of CCI large pistol magnum primers by mistake. I...

    Question about W296

For a 240gr JHP .44 Rem Magnum load Hodgdon gives a starting load of 23gr and maximum of 24gr. That's not a lot of room. What happens when loads are over/under those limits? Incomplete/sooty burning? Detonation? Or something else?

Loading Speer Deepcurl 240gr bullets in 44 magnum

Hello forum members, I'm preparing to load some .44 magnum ammo with Speer Deep Curl 240 gr JHP bullets over W296. These bullets have a cannelure. Do I need to get a crimp die for my press (Lee turret) and crimp these rounds? If so, how much crimp us appropriate?

    Mossberg 500 Sling Swivel Studs

Easy question: I have a Mossberg 500 in 20 ga. It shipped with factory-installed sling swivel studs but no swivels. Are these "standard" studs? I don't see why the wouldn't be, but I'd like to be sure before I order the swivels. Thanks for your help!

    Magazine Springs

Like most of us, I keep a firearm(s) loaded just in case something bad happens. Do semi-auto-shotguns & semi-auto mags experience spring failure in the magazines or tubes if they're kept loaded for long periods of time? Should the designated "emergency gun" be swapped out periodically?

    What Is It Good For?

A couple of years back, when ammo was getting scarce but before I began reloading, I was at a store and noticed a lonely box of Remington .44 magnum on the shelf all by itself. So I bought it. Shortly afterward, I got my setup and started making my own ammunition; I never got around to shooting...

    Case Corrosion

A few months back I bought 300 cases of Starline from my LGS and set them aside until I had time to do something with them. This morning I was counting them into 50-count bags and found a few that were corroded to one degree or another. The first two cases are corroded all the way through. No...

What to do, what to do?

Last year I bought 100 new .44 magnum Remington-Peters cases. They were fine the first time I loaded them, but when I tried loading them a second time I discovered that the case walls are thinner than the Winchester cases I have. These case walls are thin enough so that when they're passed...

    Stupid mistake

I was shooting some .38 spl I'd loaded in an S&W model 36-10: 4.5 gr. W231, Berrys PFP 125 gr bullets, Remington Small Pistol primers. Near the end of the second box I had a sequence that went like this: Bang. Bang. BANG!! pop. Uh-oh. I opened the cylinder, and sure enough there was a...

    Pre-priming cases

The area where I have my loading bench is just off a well-traveled path in our house; I go past it all the time. It occurred to me that if I have some brass I don't intend to laod right away, I might expand and prime five or ten cases every time I'm near my bench. That way, when I'm ready to...

    Happy Anniversary to Me!

I handloaded my first rounds of ammunition a year ago today: 100 rounds of .44 magnum (Berrys 220gr PFP, 9gr W231. Makes for a nice target load.) Now I'm loading for all four handgun calibers we own. This pursuit sort of expands to fill available space, doesn't it?

    Really, REALLY snug primer pockets

Reloading .38spl (again), this time a batch of PMC brass. (Where does all this stuff come from? I thought I'd loaded all the .38spl cases 3 weeks ago...) The PMC primer pockets seem to be much more snug than the Blazer brass I loaded a short while back. I am really pushing hard on the lever...

    Small Pistol Magnum Primers

I recently acquired a box of CCI small pistol magnum primers. What I had them in mond for was small-pocket .45ACP, but I was at the bench this afternoon and I got to thinking. :uhoh: I suddenly have quite a few more small pistol magnum primers than I do of the regular Small Pistol primers. So...

    Charge weight vs. Barrel Length

My wife's carry gun is an S&W 36-10 with a 1.8" barrel. That short of a barrel does not allow very much room (or time) for complete powder combustion and gas expansion before the bullet leaves it. Does it makes sense to reduce powder charges somewhat from full-power .38SPL? I'm using W231 with...

When the supply chains return to normal what's the first thing youre going to get?

I want a second set of Lee .38spl/.357 magnum dies. I'd like to adjust a set for each one and leave them alone instead of switching one set back and forth between the two.

No load data for .38 spl +p and W231

I had planned to load some .38spl +p soon. I checked Hodgdon's online load data chart for .38 spl +p using W231 and there isn't any. I suppose if there's no load data shown, Hodgdon doesn't want me to use 231 for +p, huh? The problem for me is that 231 is the only powder I have on hand.
