I figure the text of the story is worth pasting here.

Stolen 50 BMG stuff

Reposting this here for everyone to read, keep you eyes and ears open.

This a very serious post. I am trying to find the spineless thug/thugs who stole over 10,000 rounds of linked .50 cal ammo...
AND!!! to cover their spineless tracks, burned up the building and over $1.2 million in historical/transferable machineguns and property. The owner of this property was significantly under-insured and has suffered a great loss. The stolen .50 cal. ammo was mostly headstamped WCC 89. If you have heard of a huge amount of .50 cal. ammo available anywhere, or have purchased .50 cal. ammo recently with the WCC89 headstamp, please contact me immediately. The theft/arson occured in early December 2009. The criminals who did this crime NEED to be caught. Not only did they steal property, they burned a building, destroyed hundreds of weapons, and this senseless act destroyed historical gun parts and equipment that cannot be replaced. Please let me know if you hear anything. We are trying to accomplish this investigation without wasting law enforcement resources until needed for the arrest. Rewards WILL be offered for the arrest and conviction of the criminals responsible for this senseless destruction/theft. The victim is a "good-guy" and was an avid collector. Crime committed in Alabama. This is worth your time!!! We will not give up until these jerks are behind bars.
Thanks in advance. PLEASE HELP>

Well, let me put it another way. Law Enforcement definitely knows about this crime, but this fine network of concerned individuals can complement the LE efforts. I don't care who provides valuable information or helps find the a@@holes who did this....as long as we find them. Any help is appreciated and your constructive comments are always helpful.

At least it's hard to hide. Why steal 10,00 rounds of .50BMG? Pistol or rifle ammo i could understand but .50? Is he trying to support some rebel group in africa or something?

Never underestimate the stupidity of criminals. Perhaps someone in Alabama should post want to buy ads around about how they just got a 50 caliber rifle and they really want to shoot it but can't find any ammo. You never know, and what could it hurt?

Something like when the police send out flyers to people with warrants telling them they have won a boat in a free drawing. When the people show up they are promptly arrested.

Wow, that's forty cans at 250 per can, right?

Oops, that would be a sixty-seven 150 round cans.

Call that 25#/ can, that's around 3/4 ton, and a lot of trips back and forth.

Have to wonder if the perp's truck was full, and they could not haul any more.
Also have to wonder if they had no idea what was in the rest of the building before setting it aflame.

Stupid hoodlums

It is a bit strange. I don't know how quick/easy it is to sell .50cal in your country, and how much they can expect to make for it on the legit/black markets though. Can anyone enlighten me?

Gangs and criminal groups wouldn't have a (personal) use for that much of such a large and powerful round would they? I can see Mexican Drug Lords wanting that kind of firepower to use against the Police/Army in their country, but that's about it.

This doesn't pass the smell test.

The thieves gank 10,000 rounds of .50 BMG (couple tons worth of ammo??)but leave behind 1.2 Million worth of guns, guns that could be used to FIRE 10,000 rounds of .50 BMG through?

I'll bet someone's insured for far more than they're letting on.

Ditto, makes absolutely no sense, unless perhaps they were covering the tracks of some other crime, but passing on one-million dollars plus of weaponry? Not to bloody likely...I'd love to be the cop(s)working this one....

The firearms may have been secured. But damaged from the heat of the fire. Say in a safe or otherwise secured.
The bulky ammo is unlikely to be secured in the same manner. How many rounds of ammo can fit into typical storage locations.
This would explain the guns not being stolen along with the ammo by a typical criminal.

Small containers of ammunition are also much easier to stack in your typical pickup truck or SUV than belt fed machineguns assembled on a tripod. They stack like bricks in whatever shape there is room for, unlike the guns.
Which would need to be broken down to store and transport unnoticed.
So a lot of ammo is easier to transport than an m2, .50 rifle, etc without being noticed.

If the ammo and firearms were together a second option is the thief is a legal gun owner that did not want possession of registered NFA firearms with few avenues of resale. They did however choose to steal tens of thousands of dollars in ammo much easier to sell.

but passing on one-million dollars plus of weaponry?
but leave behind 1.2 Million worth of guns,

The story does not say 1.2 million in guns, it gives a total amount in property damage and guns.
I would venture most of that monetary value is in property damage to the structure they were in, not the loss of guns. Probably a nice home.

Another option would of course be that the owner was somehow responsible.

strange.

One thing is for sure: DON"T UNDERINSURE YOUR PROPERTY!!!!! I am 30% over at all times just in case.

As for this specific case, something seems very off. I am sad for the owner's loss and the loss of all that beautiful history :(

According to what I read, they destroyed one-million plus bucks worth of transferable "machineguns & property!"

My guess, they knew what was there and took what would be otherwise legal to possess. Select fire guns are traceable and illegal to possess without the necessary stamps, etc. so while they are cool, they are effectively worthless but on the black market. .50bmg ammo however can be sold in parts.

But that is a LOT of ammo as others stated. And what a waste. They destroyed 1.2 million in property and guns, etc. to score a measly $50,000 in ammo! And that's a hard $50,000 to tote around, weighing in at probably nearly a ton!

Maybe these guys already have the rifles...just can't afford to feed them. they just needed the ammo. IF they keep their mouths SHUT...only shoot moderate numbers when at the range...they might get away with this. :cuss:

Lets hope they are not smart. And lets hope other .50 cal shooters will notice that the bum that could only shoot ten rounds per trip, is now shooting fifty per trip! DING!! Red flags all over! Lets hope.

Does anybody know where at in Alabama this happened? I live right outside of Montgomery and help a buddy of mine run gunshows on the weekends, all over the state. So I will keep my eyes and ears open about this. Again, I would greatly appreciate it if somebody knew where this happened at?

This sounds like it will leak out unless it was sold to an out of country buyer.

If there are buyers, there will always be sellers. I doubt that these guys will get caught, over 1 million cars are stolen every year in the U.S. and those have VIN numbers on them, and the vast majority of them are never recovered.

It's $3.50 a round for new decent stuff. This is belted surplus.

Being generous and say $2.50 a round, this is only a $25,000 theft with millions in property damage left behind.

Still pretty darned weird.

I don't know, doesn't sound that suspicious to me. Figure 20 machine guns maybe 20,000 ave and you have 400,000 dollars - a nice collection or other guns - maybe some collectable lever actions, colt single actions, Garands, some militaria - maybe another 200,000 - then a nice large heated workshop finnished garage like building with some nice fancy cars - maybe another 500,000 - then all the other misc stuff 100,000 and it is an easy 1.2 million. As far as them just taking the ammo and not the guns - as has been said the guns may have been in a nice secure safe that they couldn't get to like the ammo. If he had cars they could have had security cut off switches and not so easy to steal, sell, or hide.

As far as burning the building - well around here there was a guy that stole cigarettes and any minor cash he could from gas stations and then burned them down in an attempt to cover up his crime - guess he figured if he burned it they wouldn't notice the stuff that had been stolen. Also known guys that just liked to trash anything they couldn't steal - a kind of jealousy thing I guess - they not only wanted to steal the stuff that they wanted but they also wanted to hurt the person they stole from - so they destroyed their property too.

Hope they catch them.
