10/22 walnut stock

hello everyone,
I have a couple of questions.#1- i bought an old 10/22 walnut stock w/metal butt end.i paid $25 for it.did i get a deal- or screwed? #2- i went to put in the rifle in the stock- it seems either the stock is smaller or the action is larger then the old ones? I plan on sanding the inner part of the stock to lossen it up a bit. #3 it has a few small dings and dents.(not real bad).is it worth it to refinish it?

#1...Sounds ok. I think new ones are $40 with the old stock sent in.
#2...I see a lot of variation between stocks and actions. You are setting the safety half on half off when inserting into stock, right? If so, start sanding. Judiciously.
