10mm 1911 opinions

I'm thinking about having a 1911 built in 10mm and am looking for opinions regarding the gunsmith as well as the base gun.
Any help?
 
Unfortunately, here in California, Dan Wesson's 10mm is not approved by "The State." The only approved 10mm 1911's are stainless Kimbers and I don't dig stainless.
 
Youn guys are seriously depressing me. The new Delta Elite will never be approved here because it has niether a loaded chamber indicator or a magazine safety. Used Delta Elites cannot be bought from out of state because the are not on the approved list and finding them in state can be difficult/expensive. I do appreciate your help. It's not your fault I live in this God forsaken land but it does bring us back to the origional question.
 
I can see now that my first post wasn't very clear. I'm thinking of buying a .45 1911 and having it converted to 10mm. Sorry for the confusion.
 
You will have to get a new top end (slide assembly) to convert a 45. Different breechface.
Your best bet if Para ordinance is allowed into California, you could get a P16-40 (40 S&W) and all you need to covert it is to ream the barrel to 10mm & install heavier springs. Then you'd have 16 rounds of 10mm in your hand. Hunter Customs has done several of these.

I've bought 2 DEs in CA in the last 6 months. one in NIB for 800... they are lots out there, you just have to know where to look.
 
I moved from California to Texas two years ago. Wow! I could not move back to California with the guns that I have purchased here in the past two years. Even AR15 have to look funny in Cal. Now if my Calif house would sell, I could buy more guns.
 
I love my Delta Elite. I had a gunsmith add a beavertail safety, extended thumb safety, and change the sights.

I suggest you spend some time looking for a used one. They turn up now and then.
 
After taking a glance at the California approved list, I would suggest looking at converting a 40 first.

The BarSto Precision 40 with the 2011 style frame is on the approved list until 11/2008. You could even get a Bar Sto replacement barrel in 10mm rather than having it reamed and ending up with a mis-marked barrel. A quick check of the Bar-Sto page confirms that outside CA they will deliver this gun in 10mm.

I would guess you are looking at about $2500+ for this option

The new para's expire from the list in 8/2008. However, they are stainless as well.

Might be worth a call to Kimber to see if they could apply a more desirable finish to a traditional 1911 if you are dbl stack averse.
 
Thanks,everyone, for your help. I can't get Fusion here but the Bar Sto was an interesting suggestion that I hadn't considered. Looks like I'll be doing some more research.
 
Papa Whiskey - I'm in the same situation as you, in California, wanting a 10mm Commander style 1911.

I can't say anything about Fusion Firearms' ability to assemble STI parts, but based on my experience, I will not be recommending their gunsmithing services.

I contacted them in October 2007, asked a lot of questions about 1911 frames for the project, specified my carry ammo. Double checked all the specs with them, specifically asking about what barrel made sense. Told them I was going to use the gun for concealed carry and emphasized the need for reliability.

Fusion Firearms bought a Springfield 1911, Commander length slide, 10mm barrel, magazines, etc. every part except the grip panels.

In late April 2008 I received the gun. Took it to the range and could not get through two magazines without double feeds due to an unadjusted extractor (spent cases remained in the chamber). I noticed bulged cases and had the range gunsmith look at the gun. The barrel chamber was cut to the point to where there was little case support.

I communicated my dismay at the lack of reliability and the unsafe barrel (emailed the photo above). Fusion's response was for me to use light loads! Things went downhill from there. I was :fire:.

I believe most gunsmiths understand the importance of a tuned extractor in a 1911 and no crafts-person I want to deal with would have released a gun that could kaboom with any cartridge that was loaded to SAAMI specs.

Some have suggested I send it back to Fusion, but what miracle would cause them to go from this to a decent gun?

I'll be mad about this until I find someone else to repair the gun. And it will be someone else.

WOW! You should copy that and put it in it's own thread. That really needs some attention of it's own.

Sorry OP just really shocked about that unsupported area there, that's down right dangerous!
