10mm for deer hunting?

Do any of you use the 10mm for deer hunting? Have any of you killed a deer with a 10mm and if so, what were your conditions and results. I am looking for something that is accurate to 50 yards. What would your opinions of the S & W 1076 and Glock 20 in this role be? I currently use a 4 3/4" Super Blackhawk, but I really do not like it because it does not fit my hands well. Thanks

Back in the early 90's I bought a Springfield Armory "Omega" (3 barrel set, 10mm-45acp-38super) ported 6" based on a 1911 frame. Have used the 10mm for hunting Whitetail, Muletail, and Antelope.....excellent round. Taken about 6 animals over the years with it....one shot drops. Longest shot was 125 yards.

You should find a ton of information on the types of animals taken with the 10mm (usually a Glock 20 is used, sometimes with a 6" "hunting" barrel). Some posts relate to deer, some to bear, some to hogs (including some HUGE 300lb hogs), etc.

In addition to not fitting my hands well, I prefer self shuckers. I have tried Pachmayer grips and did not like them. Different custom types are available, but pretty soon, you can be out a fair amount of money for grips that you do not like. I have a friend with a Glock 20 and I can shoot it pretty well. Also, I could sell my Blackhawk and a Springfield 1911A1 that I have and replace them both with a Glock 20. Just a thought.

Long answer:

With a couple of spare barrels the Glock 20 is just about the perfect universal handgun.

Here are some options besides the stock barrel.

6" Hunting bbl in 10mm
.357 Sig
.40 S&W
9x25 Dillon (10mm necked down to 9mm)


And then there are some others such as the 10mm necked down to .223 or .30. The .30 cartridge will pretty much duplicate .30 carbine ballistics...

I've even seen a conversion bbl that lets you shoot 9mm. Extraction isn't guaranteed to be 100%, but most feedback I've heard says that it's not usually a problem.

Short answer:

Yes, the 10mm with the proper ammunition is adequate for hunting as long as you don't stretch the range.

The 1076 I owned was a fine performer. I sold it because I had a tough time finding ammo for it. I sold it to a guy who planned to use it for hunting pig. From what he's told me, it's been fine for that too

I have taken both deer and black bear with my G20 with and without my 6"KKM bbl. I have never recovered a bullet!

Can't comment on 10mm in the field but one thing to consider, and I'm not sure about AR, is that many states have case length requirements for pistol calibers. These requirements are designed to basically require a standard length magnum case and the 10mm is not quite long enough - about 1.1 inches for many states if I remember correctly.

really love 'em. Some have told me that it works as well..
or in some cases, better than the big Magnums. They
soon traded or sold the .41s or .44s.

I hope to shoot black bear and deer with mine this year.
190 gr Speer TMJ @1,200 should do the trick.

The Glocks don't fit me well..i'm very happy with the 10MM
Witness. CZ75 design..so it is robust and reliable as heck.

The only requirement in Arkansas is a 4" barrel minimum.

sure the 10MM will kill deer, it is almost the equivalent of the 41 mag., but, there are better choices for deer hunting.......41 mag, 44 mag, 45 colt, 454 casull, etc........it will never be the equal of these 4 calibers regardless of what people tell you..........

Agree and agree. But the question wasn't "What's the best handgun cartridge for hunting?" Besides, this IS the Autoloader Forum and if you want to hunt with an autoloader, 10mm has got to be at or near the top of the list. Especially if you want to use a fairly conventional autoloader--not some gas operated behemoth.

Don't claim to be an expert on hunting laws around the nation. However, at least one state (MI?) with a minimum case length law makes a specific exception for the 10mm.

JohnKsa........that's true what you posted.........this is an autoloader forum.........the Desert Eagle in 44 mag, would be a better choice than the 10MM, but, is a lot bulkier and most people would chose the 10MM for that reason.........I shot a friends DE and it was very accurate, and that would be my choice, but, I shoot big hunting handguns and most with scopes anyway......

In Arkansas, there is no minimum of cartridge length or power, only specs are a 4" barrel centerfire. If I wanted to use a 22 Hornet, I could, not that I condone doing so. However, I appreciate the state assuming that I have good sense for a change. I was primarily wondering what conditions were for people that have used a 10 mm to kill deer. Weapon, load, range, etc.

I wasn't sure of the state, it's probably Minnesota, not Michigan that I should have referred to.

And, yes, the DE is very accurate--probably the most accurate pistol I have had the privilege to fire. It is also very expensive, and very large. In fact, very large is probably a gross understatement.

Use a 10mm like you would use a .357 mag...

In other words, choose heavy bullets in hot loads and keep the range down. IMHO, you should resist the urge to scope the gun as this will help you to understand your range limitations...

I've had 6 or 7 good kills w/ a 10mm

All good sized Iowa whitetails- a couple were big, and one was a monster. All shots were under 50 yds, none ran more than 40 yds, two were DRT (dead right there.) All but one took only 1 round. The one that I shot more than once most likely didn't need it, but the situation dictated the insurance (it was not the big one.) All but one round was T&T. The one round that did not exit had gone thru at least one shoulder blade. I use 200 gr XTPs and AA #7 or 9. 3 or so were with a G20, others with a 610 (5".)
