10mm gel test: Prvi Partizan 180 gr JHP

I know that Prvi sometimes underloads its rifle ammo. May be more of the same here. Some people want cheaper and softer shooting ammo.

15" is what gets me. Sure the expansion sucks, but 15" is most likely staying under the skin on the far side of the bad guy if you use it for SD. Not overpenetrating is a big deal for a powerful round like 10mm.

I bought some of this in .40 S&W JHP because some vendor had a great price on it. After it arrived, I checked reviews on it. As a brand, their expansion seems to disappoint in most calibers. Now, I wouldn't feel confident carrying it in a trail gun; it is range fodder.

This loading was 100% reliable in my 1006, but would not lock the slide back on an empty mag. Hornady 180 gr XTP fired at the same session did lock the slide.

PPU is primarily range ammo, except for some military calibers. I do appreciate that they cater to owners of obscure calibers.

PPU 10mm is junk.

You're better off dropping the same $$$ into reloading your own, or paying more for a real-deal 10mm factory load.

Why pay for downloaded, .40-level performance from a case that's pricier than its .40 little brother?

Heck, even Remington's 180gn FMJ plinking load (@ 1150fps) gets into the 10mm's low mid-range.

At 1250fps, Sig's 180gn FMJ load is churning out the same fps/fpe stats as DT's old 180gn 10mm "training" load from (circa) 2005.

Better choices out there, guys.

PP is good range fodder. 10mm practice loads without the big bang. Allows you to work on fundementals. It is exactly why the 10mm is so great. Mild to Wild all in the same cartridge.

And the only limit to the 'wild' 10mm loads is the firearm. The semis are built mild store bought 10mm...the S&W 610 revolver is needed for the wild loads. It's a reloader's dream. ... too bad that S&W won't put them back in production.

1000 fps with a 180 gr bullet is not "real" 10 mm. That's .40 S&W in a longer case. Just the reverse of the process used to create the .40 in the first place! OK for practice, but takes the fun out of having a 10.

One of the good aspects of the 10mm is it being versatile, which means that it's okay to not shoot "real" 10mm ammo through it. Most practice 10mm isn't full potential anyways, it takes more powder to get full potential which means if you're producing huge quantities of ammo, you're going to profit more by using a faster powder (less powder) but the downside is that the performance isn't where many think it should be. Shooting anything is fun, even if it's not "real" 10mm.

I recently made a pretty hot 10mm load, with a 200grain FMJ.
Speed was about 1450 fps. The RIA 1911 handled it like a champ.
Of course, just because I can does not mean the gun will get this type of load very frequently.

Is that a published load or +P/"worked-up?" The only published max load under 200 grain JHP I've chronoed was with Blue Dot and that gave almost 200 fps less than you report!

Nope, nothing published. My own worked up Power Pistol load. Probably more of a +P+ than just +P :) Blue Dot is much slower burning than Power Pistol.

I kept a couple of those hot rounds for some future fun but no point in pushing the boundries when plinking.
