10mm platform, which and why?

Colt Delta elite. Built like a tank and it is beautiful. It's a 10mm 1911 if your not familiar with it.
I just picked up this early (1991) Delta Elite that was worked over by Wilson in '93, I've been into 1911s for decades but this is my first 10mm. I never really paid much attention to the caliber until this gun came along, I'm very impressed by the published ballistic data I've seen. I haven't had a chance to shoot this one yet but I ordered a case of Blazer 200gr FMJ and a few hundred rounds of S&B 180gr JHP to give it a workout. I know they're not hot by 10mm standards but they look pretty stout on paper compared to the 230gr .45ACPs I'm used to.

I would agree, however I am really looking hard at the XDM 10mm. The tighter and fully supported chamber with match grade conventional rifling barrel, plus steel fiber optic sights from the factory is whats leaning me that way.

I recently acquired the XDM 10mm OSP version. It’s a great pistol. Good ergos, and soft shooting. Full disclosure: I am an XD fan and own several after getting rid of all my Glocks. Not a Glock basher...I just shoot the XD platform better. YMMV....

Congrats on your OSP.

I have been looking for one ever since they were announced. I hit every local gun show, the gun shops don’t have a clue about it. And when I check Gunbroker they are nowhere to be found. I’ll keep looking.

Don’t know why they’re so scarce..... There’s a new model now as well, the XDM 10mm OSP Elite.

Well I got impatient And tempted, so I picked up a new 4.5 inch XD 10 yesterday’s gun show. It was a good price a $489 so I went for it. If I come across an OSP/Elite I’ll grab one. Thanks for the heads up on the Elite.

Congrats of your new acquisition! I really like mine. Let us know your thoughts after your next range trip!

G20SF.
It's versatile and can't argue about the capacity. I have 2 aftermarket barrels from lone wolf: ported for when I want to run hard cast and 357sig conversion which is good fun. I shoot only reloads.

I have Colt DE and Kimber Eclipse II which are awesome as well but per the original post, my suggestion is G20.

I like my Ruger SR 1911 a lot.I put a Venom red dot on top of it not quite completely on board with it yet but working on it. Pistol is very tight still and a good shooter. The CZ looks promising as well but I like CZ as well

IMO, the Glock 20 is a good pistol and it is generally cheaper than most other options so it would be easier to get started. Mine shoots well. My only misgiving is while I have Glocks, I generally don't shoot Glock pistols well. I am split on the 10mm in general. Sometimes I shoot the hotter loads and like it, sometimes I hate it. I need to try one of the 1911 10mm pistols at some point. I figure they would handle the hot loads better. I have a Coonan 1911 in 357 mag and it is just plain fun to shoot.

My personal experience is that the narrower backstrap of a 1911 makes the recoil of 10mm somewhat uncomfortable. That may just be the anatomy of my hand, but it makes me prefer a double-stack grip.

I have an older (pre finger groove) G20, a G20SF and a couple of S&W 10mm guns. If I could only keep one of them I would keep one of the Smiths. The first one I would get rid of is the older G20 because it has a dangerously generous feed ramp. Anything close to full power results in a bulged case. It’s pretty much been relegated to a 40 Major with the addition of a throated 40 S&W barrel. The newer SF gun has better support but it has a replacement frame after I had a case fail and split the frame. I bought an aftermarket barrel for it and don’t think the original barrel has been back in the gun since.

The Glock has so much going for it, but it has some significant flaws as well. I still occasionally carry one in bear country but in the back of my mind I kind of expect a case failure and frame splitting every time I pull the trigger. I don’t have that fear with my 1086.

I own and love a Sig P220 in 45acp so I would really like to have one in 10mm, but the price tag is just a little too steep for me.

I think one of my next purchases is going to be the Colt Delta Elite. I love the versatility of the 1911 platform and that Colt just looks gorgeous.
You may want to do some research on the Delta if you haven't already. Chamber support was problem in the past, resulting in bulged brass. Many 10mm shooters like to load their own, and one and done brass gets expensive.

Newer Deltas may not have the problem.

Thanks for the heads up! I only reload for revolvers but I will look into the issues more.

It's an easy cartridge to load, and it's really one you NEED to roll your own on if you want full power ammo. Factory stuff is pretty watered down in many cases.

Wow, there seems to have been a resurgence in the interest in the 10mm. I'm glad to see it. I wasn't even aware that some of the 10mm models out now even existed.

I jumped on the 10mm bandwagon back in the 80s just because. It turned out to be a fun round to play around with. Of course, brass was stupid expensive. As a self defense round, I don't know. In full form, it's just too much and in it's tamer form, there are others that can do the job, like 9mm, .40 and .45. But still, it was fun to send 135gr projectiles screaming down range.

I've owned a few 10mm, but I think the most fun platform was the 1911. Just make sure that you have a fully supported barrel and all will be well. If you have a .40, you won't even need to stock a new projectile for reloading.

At the time when I was messing with 10mm, I also had a Coonan .357. From what I remember of chrono data, there ballistics were pretty similar in terms of achieved velocity vs. bullet weight.

Which gun you should get depends on what youre going to do with it. If you want to put a red dot on it, maybe a 1911 or something that you can drill and tap the frame for an optic will be necessary. I'm really not sure of how most of today's "slide ride" optics would stand up to the punishment.

I have a gen2 glock 20 I bought around the lame awb, it came with 15 rd mags at the time. I bought some ammo at a range trip which were nickel cased reloads. Thankfully for me all I ended up with was a sheared magazine catch and a stinging powder burned hand. It's the only glock I own or will own (esp now that PSA has their gen3 clones...where's their 10mm???). It shoots factory 10mm ammo fine. Just ordered a .40 conversion barrel for it (maybe seeing this thread reminded me). Before running 10mm again I'll probably get a KKM 6". With an added hogue grip so the pistol mostly fits my hand and I shoot very well with it, almost as well as my less reliable brace of early 2000s wonder finish EAA Witness pistols that now wear 40 barrels exclusively.

Just to keep updated: I ended up going with the xdm 10. Ive only got to shoot it once but I really like it.

now to buy dies and components.
A solid, if underrated choice. I have the 4.5 inch version. It is flawless and easy to shoot. I would have gone for the 5.25 inch version but I already have one of those in 9mm and I didn't have a short-ish 10mm.
