SO, I was out and about doing a few errands today, and I happened into my local Sportsman's warehouse to peruse their shelves. And wouldn't you know it, I spied an older style(polished steel bolt, roll stamped receiver with Model 88 ~ 12 Ga. ~ ) Maverick 88 with a Field Barrel (looks like it may have been a walmart gun originally, as it has the rat tailed forend) for an unbelievable 120$ price tag. I took a look, and It wasn't' in terrible shape but also not great shape. It looked like someone had decided to drop the shotgun in the dirt/sand, then they tossed it in a case until they drug the poor thing out to sell. There was sand EVERYWHERE in the action... when I asked the guy behind the counter if they had cleaned it before putting it on display he politely said i could pick up the "service plan" after I bought it, and they'd clean it up for me LMAO. Other than that, there's definitely some areas that have grown light orange fuzzies, and some light pitting... also there are no beads on the rib. I decided to take a gamble and pick it up, as the barrel is worth than much at the very least.
I just finished the arduous task of getting all the sand and grit cleaned out and got it back together, and I'll be sure to get some pictures posted tomorrow if I can. Everything checks out, other than being grungy... she cycles well, and will make an excellent base for me to convert into my preferred configuration (Take the Barrel to my gunsmith, have it trimmed from 28" down to around 20-21" (depends on where the rib lines up)and I'll probably slap one of my spare newer model stocks(those older style stocks are super slick and that recoil pad is... less than desirable)) and I'll probably use it as a Knockabout gun. I took a look at the molding dates on the stock and forend, and I think it was probably made around early to mid 2012. All In all, I think it was a solid lil find, just needed a little TLC and we're off to the races!
