14 year old looking for a shotgun

Remmington 870 or Mossberg 500. It's hard to go wrong. I really like the Browning BPS, but it costs a little more. Sorry, but I would avoid the single shots as a begginers gun because you will likely buy a repeater anyway. Plus it's hard to shoot skeet/ sporting clays with only one shot :uhoh:

It has been a long time, and back then it was a lot of newspapers, lawns mowed, and soft and hard crabs sold, but I went thru a Mossberg bolt action 20 at age 11 (couldn't hit anything moving), a Browning Auto 5 20 (couldn't abide the Browning shuffle), a Stevens 311 20 (I had a 12 gauge 311 available to use and I was into duck hunting even then), and a beautiful little Beretta Golden Snipe O/U 20 with 2 sets of barrels (the first O/U I could not shoot), before I acquired a Remington Model 1100 at age 15 in 1963. I was high average in youth skeet with the 1100 at 16. I still have the 1100.
Try to save yourself some time and tribulation by handling and shooting as many guns as possible before you jump. You may find a single shot that fits well, and I wish you luck, but the odds are not too good. And a 12 is going to belt you with almost any loads.
How big are you? That can influence the selection between 12 and 20, too.
I would look for a used Remington Model 870 or 1100. Very solid guns, and with millions made there are a lot available for reasonable prices.

what are you going to be using the shotgun for?
might help get some more recomendations.
I think you should go ahead and get a 12 guage instead of the 20 as there really isnt a whole lot of difference in recoil between the 2 in my opinion.
just need to decide what type single shot, or pump or semi auto and start looking.
 
i would recommend a 870 wingmaster or mossberg 500 in 20ga. My first shotgun was a single shot and i have grown to regret it. you will never outgrow a 20ga pump and the mossberg and remington guns are both great values, even more so when bought used. Handle both see which has the features you like better and fits you best and buy that one.
even better would be to shoot both in a side by side comparison. If you are in VA i could help with that otherwise im sure another Highroader would help you out.
 
I'm 32 and I still use the Winchester 20 ga youth pump my dad bought me when I was 11, I just put an adult stock on it. The 21" barrel with screw in chokes does everything I need it to do. It's a perfectly adequate HD, upland game, and ducks over decoys gun. If I lived in a state where I had to hunt deer with a shotgun it would be fine for that as well.

When my son is old enough to start shooting I will buy him a 870 20ga youth since I'm not giving up my baby.
 
Get what ever fits you the best.

a $100 single shot that fits you prefect, will shoot better then a $1000 that does not fit.

i would also check the used market, lots of deals out there if you look.
 
It seems many posters are asking my criteria for use this will be a multi purpose shotgun for trap and maybe some hunting but will also be used by my mom when shooting trap
 
I have the NEF Pardner 12. It was my hunting shotgun during college. I didn't have much money and bought it LNIB for $70.

I killed a dump truck load of birds with that gun. To this day, I shoot it better than I do any other shotgun, even my Browning Citori. It's light as heck, so it's easy to carry, dead nuts reliable, points and swings ridiculously well, and in all honesty, is my favorite shotgun to this day.

Just so you know, though, it will kick like a damn mule with heavier loads!

Cool story. I think the youth model guns are cool. A buddy of mine had a youth model 20ga that he bought a mag extension and a shorter barrel for, it was very easy to handle.

I still have my first shotgun too. My dad gave me a winchester 1300 12ga. for christmas when I was 13. Shot it today too. Still looks as good as it did new. I have probably a few hundred boxes of shells through it.
 
I picked up the 870 20 gauge so my son can go hunting with me. He's only 12 and it's still a bit for him to handle with Turkey loads. But I know he won't out grow the shotgun, and as I get older and he grows, I might one day have to switch my 12 gauge with him for that 20 gauge!
 
Dicks just got done with their 870 sale here and i missed it but they had the 28inch barrel Remington 870 Express Magnum wood stock for $239 as for Cabela's i really dont care for them i prefer Sportsman's Warehouse the one here locally has some guys that know guns and will tell you all you want to hear about them with a smile and their prices are usually fair. My first shotgun was a Mossberg 500A
