I was given some 147 grain 9mm hornadys. I am wanting to launch them fast, for possible hog and other live situations. It's not my first pick for hogs, but I carry the Glock 17 a lot. I like shooting it on a whim. I don't want to waste expensive carry loads. I have loaded off and on for years. Although every 9 I have ever loaded has been for paper and cans.

In my experience with 9mms the suggested lengths vary a lot. If I wasn't going for speed I would stick with my usual 1.120.

I have several target powders on hand, w231, bullseye, titegroup, and unique.

Of those, or buying a dedicated powder for faster 9mm, what loads and lengths have you had good results with? I use the word fast not hot. I'm looking for something as fast as store bought defense ammo. I'm not looking to make anything "special."

I'm returning to THR after some time away. I'm struggling to find much exact applicable data in the threads. If somebody finds one I apologize for missing it. Thanks in advance.

Welcome back...

Of the powders you list W231 and Unique are the best choices. I like slower powders with heavy bullets in the 9mm. Since you said you want to push them fast I would suggest Longshot followed by HS-6. I have used both and bit work well with Longshot taking a slight edge on both velocity and accuracy. (not to mention it's loud too)

Current load data is available from Hodgdon.

Longshot (AKA Loudshot) has worked well for me for MAX power 9mm loads, but doesn't work well (at least for me) until you get close to the MAX charge.

Alliant lists a BE86 load over 1000fps with a 147 but does not mention the bullet make. (147 JHP)

Vihtavuori has the fasted listed load I know of
147 XTP 6.9gr (MAX) of 3N38 at 1207fps !

(that is what I would call stout-Major PF in a listed load)

From what you have on hand Unique is probably the best choice.
Allaint shows 954fps with a MAX charge and a 147gr Speer Gold Dot.

PS the Start 3N38 load is 6.3gr at 1171fps OAl is 1.142.
(funny they list the OAL down to 0.00X wouldn't want to be short at 1.141:evil::))
Almost makes me want to buy a lb of 3N38 to try out.
Any 3N38 9mm users that can help out here?
Are the #s real?

Hello, John Henry!

My experience with 147 XTP in my 9mm Glock...

I can load out to 1.150" OAL and it fits the magazine and it fits the chamber.
So go ahead and see what fits the chamber and then check it to the mag.

You will appreciate the maximum OAL because some of the best powders for your purpose
need a lot of case capacity to fill. Load as long as chamber/magazine will take, work up your best fast load.

For the G17, don't be afraid to look at +P load data for the ones you carry to protect your butt.
The gun can take it. That's my personal experience, you work up your own fast load like you know how.

For Hogs? I carry my Marlin 45-70 and my Sig 40 cal. on my hip. I can't ever recall having to use my Sig though. 9mm just seems a tad under powered. Heck, I'm not real confident in the 40 cal. I am usually backup for my son who has the 300 WM or the Rem 760 30-06. Don't count on the pistol dropping a hog. Your not going to drop a big sow with one or two shots, just make it mad. Hard to hit when running for your life shooting behind you. Climb a tree if necessary.
