.17 Winchester super mag

I load the Hornady 35 grain V-Max ahead of a case full of Hodgdon't Li'l Gun for about 3,000 fps
If there was 22 Super Mag. it would be a stretch to get a 35gr bullet moving faster than 2,400 fps.
A 22 SM would likely cost much more than a reloaded 22 Hornet.
Maybe Remington could resurrect the 5mm Remington Magnum with this larger case, they could call it the 5mm RUM :)

I would bet that with a 22 Super Mag, you could get a 40 gr up into the 2300 - 2400 range. It would be nice for states that require rimfire for certain seasons. Like in GA, if you were hunting public land for hogs during small game season, you were required to use small game appropriate firearms... Pretty much .22Mag or shotguns. .22 Mag punches above it's weight, but a .22 Super Mag might be an improvement. Either way, I think we'll have to see a few more platforms developed for the 17 WSM before we can expect to see any new cartridges developed off the base cartridge.

Fella's;

I think it'll be a late day before we see another firearms manufacturer taking on the WSM.

Maybe so, I've used a 22 mag. and a 17 hmr for rock chucks and I'll take the 22 mag over the 17 hmr. I do like the flatter trajectory of the 17 but at distance it lacks oomph.

Pretty wild cartridge. Shot my buddy's a while back. Very fast and flat shooting. Makes a mess of varmints lol. I think I prefer the 17 hornet though still.

Looks like that "late day" is almost here, there's a semi auto about to go on sale, and one or two other rifles close to production...

Well, it that turns out to be the case, with other rifles from other brands available, it certainly won't hurt the chances of the cartridge surviving. Recently I've seen some ammo on the shelves, but I've yet to see both ammo and guns at the same place at the same time. That can't help.

What really doesn't help, is that the main rifle it was introduced with, the B-mag is not exactly one of Savage's strongest showings. I think Browning makes an 1885 low wall, and it looks like Ruger is probably going to come out with a 77/17 in 17 WSM, but neither of those are terribly cheap. I think if Ruger made a RAR in 17 WSM that functioned well and had good accuracy, it would help the cartridge's prospects, but then again that would require a redesign to upsize the magazine well and whatnot.

Here's one of them, (Ruger)

BTW, I was at a Cabelas the other day, and they had several B mags and plenty of ammo there...
