Actually only the most serious of the common pumpers is capable of exceeding the FAC limit with the most common pellets for cal. And Ive killed stuff up to a couple pounds with carefull shot placement and a daisy 880.

I've killed a few starlings and chipmunk and snakes with the crosman 760, there not all that fast.

Yes, England is a limit of 12ft. lbs. But what is most important is that is almost the ideal weight for most pellet rifles. There is so much Misconceptions about them. This was debated and the facts brought out many years ago. America is the land of MORE is BETTER. My gosh we see this all the time in powder burners. The Big Box stores would always sell the cheap guns and on the box would always be the stupid adds that read crap like "1,000 FPS". Words like POWERFUL etc. Gamo launched some Stupid ad campaign about a super lightweight pellet that would fly out at some ridiculous speed and had enough power to Kill a wild Boar. The Pellet was shear JUNK. Just a super light weight pellet that had a lot of speed. So when any cheap gun was made, they would advertise these high speeds based on this pellet. Bid Box store clerks would alway's tell people to "buy a Gamo Air Rifle, It has the power to kill wild Boars". To this day, I hate Gamo and vowed never to purchase a air rifle made by them.

Newbies would always buy a Pellet rifle based on FPS alone. They never bought for quality or understood quality or the world of Pellets in those rifle and Pistols.

These light weight pellets were killers on springs. As you know, dry firing a spring powered air rifle will destroy a good strip. I think these pellets weight about 5.5.gr. Even in Co2 they just performed horribly.
Many people that are new will get into the sport thinking they will just just use a pellet gun for hunting, but realize they will actually be shooting them more at targets most of the time and small game.
Pellet guns, are a addicting sport and you find out so much as you get into it. Spend a lot of time shooting you guns and you find the right pellet for the right task.

James Maccari the FAMOUS after market spring maker that was like a God to many air gunners had a saying and I will paraphrase "Get yourself a nice 12lb spring and you will not have any of the problems that come with Springs, just a nice shooting rifle."
Most custom tuners will try and tune to the 12lbs.
The Best Air RifleI have ever shot right out of the Box is the Walther LGV. By the way, that phrase Best right out of the Box relating to the LGV is spoken by many of the pro's.. The Rifle is about as smooth as you can get in all areas. Mine is worth every bit of the $700.00 I paid for it.And it is a 12lb rifle.

I could go on forever about this subject. But will end here. Get a good Rifle, and fine the right pellet. I would bet there are more Airgunners that own a Chrony compared to Powder Burner owners by a large margin. There is a reason for this.
And get use to using the Airgun Calculator.

that gamo thing pissed me off, and I'm not a real air gunner, I hate any company that does that. seems gamo came from nowhere then they stated to have the super high fps, I think they did this for a few years with out saying anything about the pbr pellets. I've seen a few gamos shoot and was not impressed at all.

that moded 1322 loonlulf is sending should hold me over for a while. Think he said offshoots the 18 gr at about 500 fps, that's about ~10 fpe I belive. One day I'll get something that maybe will do that at about 800 or so fps, still don't know what type of get. I'm kinda liking that xisico sentry pcp I've never used a pcp before.

Some of the most fun rifles that you will end up shooting and shoot often will be the lighter 500 fps range. Ex. HW30, Diana 25, and my all time favorite the Baikal single shot IZH Black Russian. (Good Luck finding on)

What would you use for general purpose shooting, something that is good for squirrel or rabbit at maybe 30 yards, but has very good accuracy.

Here is the chart I find to be most accurate. I have shot hundreds of squirrels. They are much tougher than people give them credit for. You hear all kinds of nonsense on the internet, like killing them with BB guns etc. Personally I never shoot beyond 20 yds. I have to say, I really hate wounding one. Makes me sick. I shot one, that crippled his hind legs and it was sickening to watch him try and retreat to safety crawling on his front two legs.

Game Minimum Acceptable caliber* Kill Zone** Minimum Energy
Small Birds .177+ .5″ 5 FPE
Medium Birds .177+ .75″ 7 FPE
Large Birds .22+ 1″ 11 FPE
Squirrel Sized Game .22+ 1″ 9 FPE
Rabbit Sized Game .22+ 1″ 9 FPE
Raccoon Sized Game .22+ (.25+ recommended) 1.5″ 25 FPE
Possum Sized Game .22+ (.25+ recommended) 1.5″ 25 FPE
Fox Sized Game .22+ (.30+ recommended) 1.5″ 35 FPE
Coyote Sized Game .30+ 2″ 50 FPE
Javilina Sized Game .357+ 2″ 90 FPE
Small Deer .357+ 2″ 100 FPE
Medium Deer .40+ 2.5″ 150 FPE

I didnt know gamo actually promoted pig hunting with their guns. We had some guys here doing it, and mostly failing.....miserably. A friend of mine has used his effectively on smaller trapped pigs, but ive been called to come help with a few he wasnt confident with, or hit once and didnt get penetration to the brain.

Ive taken one pig, and a finished one sheep with an airgun, and it was with my bulldog running 145s at 900ish. I still wont use it (or .22s) unless the pigs in a trap, or im in an area i have to.

Anyway, good info on the recommended energy levels. And even better info on selecting a fun useable air rifle.
Personally if Im LOOKING for power in an airgun, im going to PCPs, and for the cost and effort, i might as well shoot one of my powder burners. Which is why ive all but given up on the high fpe airguns.
A "low" power pcp with an fpe range between 15-20 tho, that could be fun. Especially if its a high pressure reservoir reg'd down to 800-1500psi....couple that with a balanced valve and ultralight hammer train, and a good shourded barrel and im back in......

but again for ease of use, ive got my QB which is plenty punchy enough.

Thanks for the chart, air will never replace powder for me, but for in town it's the only thing that you can use here.

Never say never. You are just getting into the sport. When I bought my first $99 Crosman, I never expected that I would own as many High End guns that I do today. I once said I would Never own a PCP but that might be changing as well.

It sucks we can't hunt with anything bigger then 22. Since I'm in New York state it is something to call back on, but even airsoft is not allowed in the city.

Yeah state restrictions suck. I cant use my bulldog on state land, even in rifle areas.
Id happily use my airgun for stuff when i didnt really need to kill something if it were legal.

I'd have to check I think we can use bigger then 22 for invasive species and some varmints, reading up on the law is purposely vage.
