ADRIAN, Mich. -- An 18-year-old woman who was shot by a Michigan State Police trooper following a chase in Lenawee County died Friday morning, according to police.

A sheriff's deputy tried to pull over Jessalyn Simons for a traffic violation around 5 p.m. Thursday, just outside Adrian, Mich., according to police. She led police on a five-mile chase and then hit a Michigan State Police patrol car at U.S. 223 and Wolf Creek, police said.

When a trooper tried to approach the woman's car, she drove toward the officer, Local 4 reported. Police said the trooper fired his gun, hitting the woman.

The woman was airlifted by a medical helicopter to the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo where she was listed in critical condition Thursday, according to police. She reportedly died around 7:15 a.m. Friday.

The trooper who shot the woman has reportedly been placed on administrative leave while police continue to investigate.

Always tragic when someone dies, doubly so when they are young.

Once she hit that police car it was assault with a deadly weapon IMO.

I've tried to teach my kids not to run from imaginary trouble. I sure hope it sunk in!
