Anyone own one of these? Was looking to get one for some cowboy shooting and also occasional hunting. Not going to push the toggle link action too hard, maybe stick to 44-40 factory power at the most. Mostly interested in quality or accuracy reports. what are these italian guns like? Any good or bad reports on the barrels? Also has anyone slugged one of the 44 barrels? I believe they do a 44 special as well, which may be a little more popular and I would assume uses the same barrel. Id like something that is relatively durable too, so I can hand it down one day. Thanks for any thoughts, reports or anecdotes.

In your title you say "44 mag" while you refer to .44-40 in the body of your message.
.44 MAGNUM AND .44-40 ARE NOT THE SAME ROUND AND ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.

Uberti makes great rifles but I would not upload .44-40 to .44 magnum loads .... and personally I am very suspicious of any toggke-link lever in a magnum chambering.

I have two carbines in .44-40, a Winchester 1873 by Uberti and a Burgess 1883, also Uberti. The round is a fine cartridge for close range, and has historically taken a lot of deer. I wouldn't use it on bears, and it will only make Grizzlies mad.
It is not very readily available .... might be easier from specialty companies through Internet order. .45 Colt would be a similar easier to find caliber.
If you want .44 magnum, I suggest a Marlin or a Winchester 1892 type action such as a Rossi R92.

I owned one and it was far and away, without any modification, the slickest running lever rifle I have ever held. It was also quite accurate.

I only reason I sold this rifle is that it won't handle cartridges any longer than 1.6" and I like to load heavy-ish SWC's in my .44's.

I really hope this thread doesn't degrade into Internet Experts telling all of us how the engineers at Uberti got it all wrong chambering an 1873 rifle in .44 Magnum.

I think he just means 44-40 level loads.

Thankyou , correct.

And to tommygun thanks, have owned 2x Rossi 1892(in 357). Not so interested in them as the barrels are untapered, very heavy and slow 1:30twist and marlin for the record doesnt do a 24" barrel. Not interested in 45 colt, already have 44 special on hand.

Thanks 35 Whelen, great post and nice gun. Yes hoping the thread doesnt go that way as anytime the mods lock one up the OP cant get the info they need, unfair especially if its a separate argument to their question.

 Gotcha! I have a Rossi R92 in .45 Colt. It is not by any means what I consider "the creme of the creme" of 92 actions by any means. It is, IMHO, a decent lever gun, inexpensive, practical, utilitarian, .... what you might stick in your trunk or someplace if you wanted a longarm with you and an AR-15 was either legally impermissible or frowned upon.

Interesting that you like .44 special. I saw a Uberti made Winchester 1873 carbine, a very very nice one, a few weeks ago at a local store. And, it was beeeeaauuutiful! But it said .44 special on the barrel. Bizarrely the price tag said '' .44magnum/.44 special.":uhoh::scrutiny: Huh? The carrier block might not accept that long of a cartridge .... and headspace? Anyway I didn't buy it as I haven't seen 44 spl in a long long time.

:scrutiny: I really ought to get into reloading .... :(
