What do you all think would be a good 1911 for match. I was leaning toward a Kimber Gold Match, or Team Match. But then my dealer pulled out a Dan Wesson Pointman and I was thinking it might be something to build on for the price. Im open to all suggestions.

Thanks
Jeff

"Match?"

(Regardless of the kind of match, you sure don't need to have "Match" in the name of the pistol.)

IPSC, as run by USPSA in the United States, has four divisions for semi-autos:

1. Production, which is basically double-action autos with no more than 10 round mags. There is no major/minor power factor distinction: everyone just has to make minor (125PF). I see Glocks and SIGs moft often in this class.

2. Limited, no optical sights, must be .40/10mm caliber or larger to make major (165PF). No capacity limit, except mags must fit in 140mm box. The most competitive guns in this class are high-capacity, double-stack guns in .40SW, and most are based on either the SV/STI design or the Para-Ordnance.

Alternatively, you can shoot a .40SW Glock in this class and use your hi-cap mags.

3. Limited-10, Same rules as Limited, but only 10 round mags allowed. A single-stack 1911 can be competitive in this division at the club level, as long as you have 10-round mags.

4. Open, anything goes. I think there's a 160mm magazine length restriction.

You probably cannot get a Open gun for nuder $1200. If you want to stay with a single-stack 1911, you'll be shooting in Limited-10 division. The criteria for a such a gun is not really anything special: it has to be near 100% reliable, and it has to be accurate enough to hit an IPSC "head shot" (6"?) at 30 yards max.

I have been shooting L-10 with my Dan Wesson Patriot for over a year. It had some teething problems but once those were sorted out, it's been 100% reliable.

You may be able to find a used double-stack 1911 for Limited class for $1200 if you look around. A Para is probably more likely in that price range than an STI/SV.

For USPSA..either gun will work well for you..

things that will be helpful...

good trigger, good sights, magwell and good mags...

things that will be necessary..reliability...reliability..reliability...

a good L10 gun will take you a long way..locally and nationally...

lots of single stack matches popping up too..1911 society, etc..

anyway..I use to have a great beater of an L10 gun..had a decent trigger broke about 3 pounds, a magwell, heinie sights and that was about it..it had a stock colt barrel and rattled like crazy..but it ran and ran...

If you look into the rules carefully, you can easily make a gun that is good for USPSA Limited-10, IDPA CDP and Single Stack Classic.

Thanks everyone, I'm leaning toward the Dan Wesson because of the price. What beside a trigger job should I look into getting custom on the gun?

Thanks Again
Jeff

What beside a trigger job should I look into getting custom on the gun?

A good adjustible sights (DW's has models with this already on), mag well and Wilson mags (well... maybe Novak too).
Minor things...fiber optic front sight, ambi-safety and maybe a checkered front strap. ' though, skate board tape works well enough for me. Good luck!

First get the pistol, next shoot the hell out of it getting to know it. Then you will know what modifications you would want done to it.
If you are looking to build a pistol then it would be better to buy a standard mil-spec model. Then you can choose between all the aftermarket parts makers and add exactly what you want to it.

There is some great advice in this thread.

As for mods, I agree with Majic. Buy it. Shoot the heck out of it. Only then decide what to change. My opinions of what was the perfect competition gun changed a ton from when I started to now.

The most versatile gun for competition and to start with is likely the Dawson Para. Several options are included and you have great service and warranty. www.dawsonprecision.com

For $999 you can get a tweaked double stack gun in .40 that you can shoot ESP div in IDPA and Limited and L10 in USPSA.

I have a Kimber .45 for IDPA (that I started with in USPSA) and an STI/Dawson tweaked Edge for USPSA. The double stack moved me up one class just in reload time alone in L10. I wish I would have just started with the Dawson guns.

To Darkside852003,

Looks like we both came to the same decision. I bought a DW PM7S on Gunbroker.com, it should be delivered by Thurs/Fri. From all I could find, seems like the best "bang for the buck" out of the box.:D
