1911 magazines

I'm looking to pick up some 1911 magazines who makes some good ones 7 rounders

Bought some Klonimus mags a while back. Give them a try. Well made and the price is right

I've got a couple of lower-end 1911's, a Tisas and an Armscor High Standard (just bought that).
I've had no trouble with 7 rd mags in the Tisas so far, including the very cheap ones Sarco sells. I'm just putting FMJ through it.
I've tested the High Standard and so far, so good.

But, my brother has a couple of Colts. He swears by the Chip McCormick mags, those and the Wilson Combat (which I'm reading are now going to be one and the same). Those seem to be the universal "safe" choice.

The Tripp CobraMags are the "safe" choice. The Wilson and CMC mags are the more affordable choices

An interesting side note is the origin of these magazines. The CMC mags were the original 8-rd mags from Devel and were designed by Charles Kelsey. The Wilson mags were designed in collaboration with Bill Rogers and were the first 1911 mags with a removable floorplate

I belive I mentioned Checkmate earlier but wanted to add

I've had very well made ACT officer 1911 mags. I've used a number of 8rd mags with the Devel follower and they ran great as well. I have mostly changed over to 8rd CMI mags currently.

Honestly, other than some cheapo no-name mags I've had reliable service from any of the brands mentioned in this thread. I just like to standardize and the CMI fits my bill.

I like CheckMate's products, and have a bunch of their 1911 mags, but the one mag I won't buy from them any more is their standard tube length 8 rounder. It is a very tight squeeze putting their CMF, a spring, and 8 rounds of .45 ACP in a tube that length. In my eclectic collection of 1911 mags, there is no mag that is more difficult to seat than a standard length CheckMate 8 rounder.

I haven't used their extended tube 8 rounder, but if I were picking an 8 rounder from CheckMate, that's what I'd choose.

After my Kimber took a dislike to my mix n match batch of 7rd mags, I dumped them all and bought a dozen Chip PowerMags... and haven't looked back. OP was looking for 7rd mags... I would still recommend the CMC's... just load them up with 7 rounds if that's what you want.

In my experience, however, it boils down to what your pistol likes. A pistol and magazine not living in harmony with each other will quickly turn it into an exercise in frustration.

I run the standard tube length. All my 1911's will feed a 180gr TC, 200gr SWC and even empty cases out of those mags. They've been dropped, kicked slapped and slammed home and they keep on trucking.

MetalForm, Checkmate and Mec-Gar are all good. Due to availability issues in my neck of the woods, I have mostly Mec-Gar. But I also have a few MetalForm that have lasted me for about ten years now and are just now showing the beginning of problems. I'm not gentle with mags, so ten years is a very good service life.

ETA: Do not buy magazines that promise eight rounds in the length of seven. Spring and follower have been monkeyed ith to do so. If you want eight in the mag, buy a real eight round mag. Otherwise, go with the standard seven.

I now use Tripp CobraMags.

I started getting inertia feeds (double feed, two live rounds) with the Checkmate hybrid feed lips. I discovered the feed lips were spreading with use.

It's my belief that the parallel design feed lips that Tripp (and other manufactures) use is less prone to spreading over time with heavy use.

You can't get no better than USGIs. I've got some still in the wrapper. Work extremely well in my 1911. They're MILSPEC and do the job!!

I got burned on "new in the wrapper" "GI" magazines. These are being faked. The bogus ones have the spurious "30745" manufacturer code. The good ones are marked with the "1M291" code, which stands for Check-Mate Industries. If you place the good ones and the fake ones side by side, you can see the obvious differences.
