My oldest kid is big enough now that hiding things up high isn't going to be foolproof anymore. It's still highly improbable that she would both manage to get something off a 6" shelf and break all the rules about guns, but anything that can happen, will.

I have a full size 1911, blackhawk light and three mags. No need for range gear since I have range cases galore.

The 1170 looks like the smallest option that will work. On the upside it comes in all the cool colors, is plenty rugged, and is the cheaper option. It is pretty blocky.

The 1075 is interesting. About the size of a laptop. Very packable/flyable. Doesn't scream "gun case!" However there isn't much padding top and bottom, which doesn't matter too much with a 1911, and it looks a little more smooshable. Also only comes in black, which the mall ninjas and suburban commandos have forever ruined, and makes your gear get really hot.

Has anybody laid hands on the 1075? Thoughts?

Whoops. This probably goes in the accessory area.

    Sorry.

Try this Cabelas case. I have the rifle version and it's very well made and lockable too.

That one is nice, but I want something that will fit in a nightstand or up on a bookshelf. I'm going for minimal size, but still able to be dropped or get rained on.

Basically like one of the little gun vaults but a little more practical is what I'm looking for.
