I'm looking at buying another 1911. I have a Gold Cup and a Smith PD 1911. What's the skinny on the Desert Eagle 1911's and the Rock Islands? For the price of a Mil-spec Springfield I can get a tricked out DE. I've heard a lot of good reviews on the RI's, but my late father always said the quality of the steel was not as good as the Colts and Springfield's. I know metallurgy has come a long way. Remington R1's are on the short list as well. Any insight?

I had a Rock Island compact, but it now resides with my nephew, who admired it and needed a 1911 for HD. It was accurate and reliable. A decent firearm for the price and very serviceable. But I've been spoiled by Colts.

Don't have and haven't fired an R1. But I have handled several and they look to me like a nice piece for a reasonable cost.

If you have a Gold Cup, then you'll probably be disappointed by anything less. That is, unless you're just looking for a beater. If that's the case, then a Rock Island is fantastic. I might also suggest getting it in a different caliber.

I'll second that - I recently bought a RIA 9mm Tactical, and I'm impressed with the fit and accuracy.
