Does anyone have sources for a scope mount that would fit a 1911 by attaching to the tactical rail under the barrel.

Sig makes one for the mosquito and Brugger and Thommet makes one for the HK USP that is a quad rail design.

This could be a hella nitch for somebody to fill. I would just like something to hold a holo sight and I don't want to drill holes of get one of the grip mount designs.

Thanks! bevr

I'd hazard to guess that nobody makes one because it would be pointless for a duty pistol or concealed carry weapon.
Because all 1911s are CCWs or duty weapons. No one would ever use a 1911 in competition. Yet, drill & tap, and grip screw bushing mounts - equally pointless on a CCW or duty weapon - are readily available.

Your reasons make perfect sense to me. I don't know of anyone who makes them as a production item. I do know of a darn good machinist with an SOT, so I'll ask him how difficult / expensive it would be for him to make you one.

I didnt say that ALL are CC or duty weapons. However, I'd say that many more are used for these purposes than for competition.

I'd say that competition guns are a statistical anomaly. And as such a small niche market, its probably not profitable for someone to offer a scope mount. Purely a business decision.

Hate to rain on the parade, but no 1911, 1911A1 of any accurate reproduction has rails.

The question is moot.

Competition guns (a small minority), in general, mount the monster sights to the slide or through the side of the frame.

I shoot competition and the whole idea of mounting a scope to rails on the underside of the dustcover seems kind of goofy.

OTOH, some things I've thought are goofy have become popular in the past 20 years...

There is such a product for Glocks. As many of you know, Glocks are sometimes used for concealed carry and have been used a time or two by various law enforcement agencies as duty guns, but I am sure that is just a fad. Anyway, TDI makes one for Glocks. See http://www.tjgeneralstore.com/glock_accessories.htm

Really, that is odd. Companies like Wilson Combat, Les Baer, and several others seem to make accurate 1911s with rails. Maybe you should inform them as to their products lack of accuracy? What is it about a rail that makes a 1911 inaccurate? Since you already rained on our parade with the news, you might as well explain it in some detail.

Sorry Bevr, can't find anything for a 1911 that fits your query.

Double Naught,

The design specifications for the 1911 and 1911A1 are well known. They do not include any reference to rails to hold accessories.

Perhaps you would like to contact Wilson or Baer and inform them the specifications have changed, at least in your opinion.

These specs are between 80 and 90 years old. They have not changed. STI is correct in naming the newer versions of its products 2011. However, to say a design is a 1911 and modify at will is a misnomer.

Buy a 1911A1 and look for the frame rails. Not only will they be lacking, but so will the extended grip safety, the extended thumb safety, the sights, etc.

By your definition a Glock might be a 1911 in Tenifer clothing.

The nomenclature is very specific. A 1911 is a 1911. OTOH, a Glock might be a first, second, third, or soon to come, fourth generation.

A 1911 will not have rails, or will it have been made at any date following the armistice of WWI.

My goodness. We are talking 80 years between the design of the 1911 and the concept of frame rails. It just wasn't in JB's mind that someone might want to mount a flashlight under the frame 80 years ago.

Know your history. It is of minor importance.

So the design doesn't involve a rail. Big deal. The design didn't involve anything other than military sights, 7 round magazines, a milder steel, corrosive ammo, a spurred hammer, no beavertail, etc.

I guess they aren't accurate reproductions either, huh?

I don't recall OP mentioning that he wanted a 1911 specific to JMB and the military's exact specs, did he? He wanted a mount that would attach to a 1911 with a rail.

Loop, semantics games like that are just dumb. A 1911 is a 1911. No, I don't include double stacks or dao's in my definition, but you can't tell me Wilson Combat doesn't produce a damn fine 1911 with a rail. They aren't the only one, there are several. I have one I built by hand using mil-spec measurements to fit everything, and trust me, it's a fine example of a 1911.

Not how it works. The scope doesn't mount on the underside, the mount does, then passes around the left side of the gun creating a second rail on the top over the slide.

That said, I just don't see any point in putting a scope on a 45acp.

In an effort to actually try to answer the question:

The mounts I've seen that attach to a rail all have a secondary mounting point farther back. (Glocks trigger pin is the most common). It was probably found that cantelevering a scope mount from the front of the weapon back was to flexable for accuracy. Since the 1911 doesn't have a handy replacable pin in the right spot you would have to drill and tap the frame anyway, so why bother with the whole rail issue in the first place?

Of course you could by one of these and try it. The rails should be the same.
