What exactly is it? Im moving from rifles to pistols now and im guessing its a pistol style?

nice thanks. but still 1 thing imconfused about. Why do other companies make 1911s ig its Colts idea and patent?

What Southpaw said.

All of the others are copies, and some quite good, of the original design patent that expired years ago.

1911 is the term applied to all the autoloaders that follow the design. Similar to all the clones of the AR-15 rifle, or how all colas get called Coke.

It was and still is an excellent design. About 25% of my collection consists of 1911 derivatives. The problem with Colt was that they sat on their backsides and were too slow to respond to demands of the market (look how long it took to get the beavertail grip safety and usable sights as standard). If they'd been faster with R&D, Springfield and Kimber would be small potatoes today. Of course, Colt's management (every couple of years you see clueless replace by clueless) never did get it.

Analogous to AR-15, Bushmaster, Olympic, DPMS, and others all make AR-15 clones of the Colt AR-15.

Similarly with the "AK" design with multiple variants.

The 1911 pistol design is more proof that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Safe shooting,
