1944 Winchester 22. cal single shot bolt action rifle.

I just bought a (roughly) 1944 22. Cal Winchester, single shot, bolt action rifle. It's in great condition, (no scratches, rust, etc.) but it's missing the bolt assembly. Does anyone know where I could find one. I've looked at every major antique gun dealer in my area and no one has my part. If anyone has any info or comments I'd be grateful.

P.S. I know that any gun sold in the U.S. before 1986 didn't have a serial number, including this one. I narrowed down the year by compairing my gun against a list of design changes/modifications. And I did say roughly. If it's not a 44 it's either a 43 or a 45.

I think Winchester was making more than one model of .22 single shot at the time.
Can you identify? Not a lot of hope for a bolt, I doubt they made many spares.

Not quite.
Serial numbers were legally required beginning in 1969 under the terms of the Gun Control Act of 1968. Before that, they were not required and were often not used on inexpensive guns like yours, but the higher end firearms were always numbered. I remember when Model 70 #1 from 1936 turned up.

WWII era Winchester parts are really hard to come by, especially entire bolts. A place called shooting Hunting.com. They list gun part dealers. http://www.shooting-hunting.com/results.html?Keywords=Gun+Parts&FoundID=400

Gunbroker.com and auctionarms.com searches often turn up obscure parts or even parts guns.

You can even try numrich gun parts.

Very few parts exist from that era as anything they had on hand, they used for various projects.

If you have some pics of the rifle, that may jog some of the members memory. I have a ton of Savage parts, but very few Winchester parts.

Can you find a model number, like Model 67 or 67A?

It's almost got to be either older or newer then that.

Winchester wasn't making many civilian .22 rifles during WWII.
Too busy making M1 Garands and M1 Carbines, among other things.

At any rate, look on the barrel for the actual model number.

Look on the left side of the barrel near the receiver and there will be a code, let us know what it is and you will get a date. Look at Gunbroker or other auction sites for a gun matching yours for a price. By the way, Remington called more than one model a Target Master.
