I'm thinking about trying 3 gun out at a local range and have read its better to just use what you already have. Well the only shotgun I have is a old 1950 870 wingmaster. It's all original and the only thing I would do is put a extened mag tube on it. It's either that or buy another shotgun.

Hey that's good enough reason to buy a new gun!! Mater of fact just wanting a gun is enough reason!

If your in Upper Sandusky, Ohio why not go to the Ithaca factory?

Take a look at the Model 37 they have you may like it.

Since you are already use to the Remington 870 you could try their 870P (Police). They have a wooden stock model with 20" barrel and 8 shot magazine. I believe their stock number is 24888. If money is an issue then you could go with a Mossberg 500 or 590.

the 1950's 870 you have is the exact same weapon as the one you go buy today with only a couple minor changes. Use it for anything you want, however, if for any type of defense use you want to get the flex tab converstion. Other then that go have a blast (pun intended)

Also, if you go to put a Remington tube extension on it you need a pre 90's barrel bracket because of the longer stand off on your barrel. New barrel brackets have and X stamped into them and the one you need is plain. If you try to use the bracket the tube will be slanted up.

I did exactly that. Around 1980, I figured I needed a defensive shotgun more than a goose gun.

So, I worked over the 1950 field model Pop bought used and gave me in 1959 or so on a pheasant hunt into a "Serious" shotgun. I used it for 3 gun for a few years, hunted some deer with it and "retired" it to HD duty.

It still runs beautifully.

Mods were....

Cutting the barrel to 18" plus a little, mounting a ramp and bead. Long forcing cone.

Installing a Lyman Peep sans aperture.

Side Saddle and two shot Remington Mag extension w/ clamp.

Police wood stock and forearm with QD stud. Good Rempad, now in need of replacement.

Other than it's a 2 3/4" only gun, it's nigh optimum.

One caveat, this was not near new condition when I began the makeover. On a nigh perfect example of a first year of production 870, I'd leave it alone.

HTH...
