Educate me, but weren't the pre 29s five screws?

Cause that looks like my 29-2. Except your grips are prettier.

But if that's a pre 29, then the grips aren't original to the gun, are they?

there are 5 and 4 screw pre 29s, no those are not the correct grips, but i do have the coke bottle grips but i dont keep those on there for shooting as they sell for up to $400 now, but ill send you a pic if you like? csa:)

Isn't the 4th screw on the upper portion of the side plate? I think that must be a 3 screw non marked as Model 29. A beautiful gun never the less! I don't think there are many 5 screw .44 magnums as by 1957 they were going to 4 screws. I think 4 screws went away in 1962 or 63, I was just getting into college, and the .44s were pretty exotic!

It is a four screw Pre 29. Screw locations are one in front of trigger guard, three on lower side plate. Two exposed, one covered by grips.

Just like this 29 no dash

Another Pre 29

Some really nice 44's shown here. Here is another pre 29 - I added the Target Ivories. This is a four screw gun. :D

The .44 Magnum (I am getting away from the "pre" terminology) came out in 1956. In 1957 the upper side plate screw was eliminated and late in the year the model numbers appeared. The 5 screw guns are rare because they were only made for a year or so and a 4 screw non-model marked .44s may be even harder to find because production was likely less than a year. In 1962 the trigger guard screw was eliminated (thus becoming the 29-2... the -1 came in 1961 when they changed the thread on the ejector...). I think the 4" barrel became available in 1957 (or maybe 1958?).

At least, I think that's how it went.
