2 Customers Find Gun Store Clerk Dead

A clerk was gunned down inside a northeast Harris County gun store Thursday, sheriff's deputies told Local 2.

Two customers found James Cornelius, 32, behind the counter of the Southern Firearms Store on Bear Bayou and Pecan shortly before 4 p.m. investigators said.

"We don't know if there was any money taken. There's a cash register there that's open and there's nothing inside. That appears to be possibly the motive at this time," Harris County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Bruce Williams said.

Cornelius was the gun store owner's son.

Police have not named any suspects in Cornelius' killing.

Not worried about missing money as much as determining a motive as a beginning to an investigation. With the money gone, they check on all the usual robbers. If the money was still there, they look into who doesn't like him.

Shows what happens when criminals are smart enough to aim and come in with guns drawn. I doubt even Jelly Bryce could've fired back.

Bad thing about a gun store is that customers often come in with guns and the owner doesn't think twice about it. If I owned a gunstore I would be ever vigilant anytime a customer I didn't know came in.
