$200 FAL parts kit

Since I haven't went that route yet, how much will someone spend to turn that kit into a rifle?

Receiver availability is the wild card right now. DIYS project will probably run you another $550 give or take a bit, probably $750 or better to have someone else screw it together and refinish.
 
How much do the FAL receivers usually cost? With a kit like this, what would the expected build cost for a noob like me?

I'm figuring $200 kit, $400 receiver w/transfer and shipping, $100 for compliance parts and $50 misc.

The extra $200 paid to a smith to put it all together and give it a nice finish should be pretty accurate, more likely to be low than high.

My cheapest build in the heyday was less than $400
 
Website says $200 for wholesale pricing. Wonder what their retail pricing is?

I only got one of the Imbel kits from Dan's @ $150.
 
$200 + price of reciever is about $50-$75 worth of savings to buying an assembled century Imbel L1A1. Worth it?

Probably not, what with the current wait on receivers. If it's a good dealer and he'll back up the buy, those are odds worth playing. It's a good kit on a good receiver, worst case is you'd have to replace a couple of compliance parts.
 
As always the problem with kits like these is that you have no idea what kind of condition the barrel will be in until the kit arrives. Figure in the cost of a new barrel, gunsmithing, and the cost can start escallating quickly.

In my experience with parts kits when they are described as "good" condition that usually means beat to crap. :cool:
 
I built my first FAL for about $800. I was able to find a gunsmith on the FAL Files who was willing to mentor me and let me use his tool. This was a big help because the cost of tools would have added another $200. He also helped me make sure everything was assembled correctly and it was properly head-spaced. We even sand-blasted and parkerized it so it looked like a brand new rifle. It functions flawlessly and I would put it up against any new or used FAL that I have seen for $800.

I would definately suggest joining the FALFiles and ask for any builders in you area who are willing to help. I just finished my second FAL (a para cabine approx. $1000). I built this one mostly by myself and I had a couple more hiccups from not having an experienced builder with me. I still got the rifle built and it seemed to work fine when I test fired it last weekend.

Building a FAL is closer to working on a car than gunsmithing, everything bolts together with a minimum of fitting and requires only two or three specialized tools. Do the research on the internet, ask around the FALFiles, and you should have any problems.

Edit: Both of the kits I got came with nice barrels, my 21" FAL has no problem hitting a 12" taget at 100 with the stock iron sight. A replacment barrel can run you $70 (for a converted Rem 700) to $250 (for a new DSA chrome-molly).
 
I'd second FALFiles.

My kits came with very minty barrels (on the inside). Every time I get one built it's not 6 months before some friend wheedles it out of me and I've got to go hunt another receiver and get the build completed again.
