We get a good long rifle season here in NC and I have been productive with the does. My season is pretty much done unless I see bullwinkle. The freezer is good and full!

All kills with my Savage 10 and Griffin Recce 7 suppressor. There is another good size nanny not pictured because I had a lot going on that evening. I must say I am hooked on the suppressor. It is really a better experience in the field. At least stand hunting. Although I got the little doe while still hunting.

I killed this small buck on Thanksgiving morning because my son wanted some venison. 10 yard shot. It's the first time I ever called up a buck with "The Can" by Primos. I fiddle with it to pass the time but this time the buck came across the property line from my neighbor's place. It's real thick and my place is open. He didn't see or smell a doe so turned to go back. He never made it.

Cow elk taken near Chama, NM last Tuesday. A group was crossing a road 200 yards ahead of me, I missed one then this came out. Gun was a 1968 Sako Finnbear in .30-'06, round was Remington ammo with 180 grain Scirroco bullet. Was very impressed with it, the bullet went through the top of the heart and lower lung and broke the far shoulder before exiting. Exit wound is below my left hand in photo. She only went about 10 yards.

The wife and I went hog hunting earlier this year, and I got this guy. @Paul7 jogged my memory because I used the same bullet to finish this boar, though out of a Winchester model 70. I'd taken a shot at him on the trot earlier in the day and hit his nose, but he kept on. I found him later on a stalk and put a round above his left eye from a kneeling position with him staring me down. The Remington 180gn Scirocco is a winner. 2286.jpeg

Nice one, James. I'm no expert, but another elk I shot a few years ago at about the same distance as the one this week with a 150 gr. Federal hunting round and the first shot just took a small piece out of the near lung lobe, after which the cow just stood there for a while and later laid down, where I got within 100 yards and finished her off with a head shot. The bullet didn't even make it to the far lung lobe let along pass through. The Scirocco was completely different, it was all over in seconds. Guys far more knowledgeable than I who have tried many different bullets are sold on this one as well. Very accurate as well.

I thought I would share a harvest. I booked a bison hunt for mid September. My wife suggested a rifle purchase, and I was able to buy a grail gun, a Lyman Ideal Sharps, model 1878, a new gun in 45/70 Government. I took a 1000lb bull, and it was a great time.

There great eating, what bullet you use did you recover it.

Against my better judgement, I used the 405 Remington jsp bullet sold in bulk, over a mild amount of Reloder 7. The 485 flat nose hardcast lead bullet that I had loaded in anticipation of the hunt, didn't pass the plunk test, and wouldn't chamber. I had to use them as a last minute load. The shot was about 70 yards. I was able to recover it on the off shoulder, under the hide. The weight of the slug was 395gr, and expanded to near 65 caliber.

Next year if I get a chance, I am going with 405 gr plain base hard cast.
And yes, he is mighty fine eating, almost indistinguishable from prime beef.

Noting wrong with them rem 405s, I've shot a bunch of them. That's pretty good weight retention for them. The meat on the one my dad shot was wonderful, would shoot one every year if I had the money. The tung is good to.

Had a decent year hunting.
In PA, we have a 3 day " old mans and young kids" rifle doe season.
I didn;t see any deer until the 3rd day and a small doe came out of a thicket. I hesitated to shoot her but figured some chops are better than none so raised the old National Ordnance 1903A3 and the 1944 Rem 2 groove barreled parts rifle did its job.

In our archery season, I hunt within 90 feet of my garage in a residential area. My treestand is 20 feet up.
This guy, who was nocturnal all summer / fall walked past me and by the time I raised the Ten Point FX4 crossbow, was 20 yards out quartering away. The bolt passed through high on my sode and exited in front of his front shoulder. He ran 35 to 40 yards but slid another 40 down a hill to a creek.

That pretty much did it for my deer season but I do have one doe tag left for after Christmas.

I had also scheduled a cow elk hunt in Wyoming and drove the 24 hours to get there.
My gun bash win Savage 111 FNS in .300 winmag did its job at 180 yards

So, My 8 1/2 cu ft freezer is completely full.
I'm a happy old man.

It was an awesome weekend deer hunting but I did not take a deer. I was sort of focus on antlers and all I saw was does and yearlings, lots of does and yearlings but I didn't really need any more meat in the freezer so I restrained myself. I did get some varmints though.

My first bobcat and the first critter killed with my 30 Remington AR I built this spring. She came past my blind right at last light Saturday while I was watching a spike feeding in the food plot. She was so close my first shot missed under her because I did not compensate for the scopes height over bore at close ranges. She did not run far, going into a crouch to stopped to look around at what was making all that noise, that was a mistake, a second shot at about 30 yards stopped her.

We are overrun by armadillos in middle Tennessee. I have killed a dozen or so in the past year. Sunday afternoon walking around I crossed paths with this one. They are noisy critters in the dry leaves. 30 Remington AR anchors the uparmored opossums a little better than my subsonic 300 BO, but is a lot louder. :D

Elk and a deer on my property this past November and both shot suppressed (SilencerCo Omega) with a Tikka T3 TAC .300 Win Mag shooting Federal Premium Vital-Shok 180gr Trophy Copper. Bullets passed straight through, very little meat damage, both dropped within a couple of yards. I got a little under 200lb of meat back from the processor so a good hunting season for me.
