Like many of you hunters I have been planning for next hunting season. As part of the planning I have been trying to decide on what rifle, bow, and other tools I will be using this year.
What tools do you plan on using for 22-23 season. A new bow, your old faithful rifle, ext... Has your state law changed (Illinois) allowing new rifles. Have you drawn a new species tag.
I would enjoy reading!/seeing what you are planning on using.

All for Fl:
X-bow: PSA fang 350 (only one I got), want 1 doe for archery
Muzzle loader- Traditions inline (plan B if archery doesn't produce a good doe)
Rifle- Rem 700, 243 (for Mrs. Fl-NC on doe rifle days and me for hunting this year's buck)
MAY use RAR in 6.5 CM if I get to hunt another place (I'm limited to 2 does 1 buck where I do most of my hunting)

Wisconsin this year...
Archery : Ten Point crossbow. If Dad joins me he will use it he is 82 and I will use my Matthew's.
Rifle: Weatherby MarkV ultra lightweight 7mm Rem Mag opening weekend. After the opening I think I will try a Savage Axis 243win I picked up a few years ago.
Muzzleloader: Cabela's 50cal

If there is a heard reduction season close to home I may try to go for the doe hunt. I will work harder to find a 44mag Smith for the hunt.

Drew a Colorado bear tag, here we use 30-30s typically for treed bears, but out there it’s more open so I’m told to be ready for shots over 100. Rem 700 in 300wsm, and savage 110 .308 for backup.
Deer season (nc): I will probably start with a win 70 in .308 win. From there I’ll go vz24 in 8mm, mosin nagant in 7.62x54r, marlin 336 in 30-30, all depending on weather and terrain in the spots I’m hunting.
I’ll take the .41 mag Blackhawk most times with full intentions of taking my first deer with a handgun and then, as usual, I’ll chicken out and use the rifle.
Bow: Matthews for archery season
Crossbow: some cheap Barnett recurve because in some of my stands it’s too tight to come to a full draw with a vertical bow.
Muzzleloader: big fan of the cva wolves.
Because I’m going to Colorado taking me away from home and work, I may have to sit out bow and muzzleloader. I hope not.

I’m planning on trying to take a deer with my 44 special Ruger Blackhawk. Haven’t ever taken one with a handgun. Then, late season, I want to take a bobcat with a handgun. That’ll be a real trophy. Not sure what I’ll do with the skin but I’m wanting to save it for either a full mount or have a hat with flaps made from it. Plan to eat the meat, provided I can get it prepared decent.

I plan on using 3 rifles this year:

Nosler M48 with Leupold VX6HD 2-12X for a MT mule deer hunt in Nov. I'll take a back-up, just haven't decided yet between my .260 and a .300 Win Mag.

My M7 .260 custom project was completed too late for last years season, so I'll use it for my local hunts.

My M7 in .350RM came back from being Cerakoted after I left home for here, haven't seen it yet. The Manners stock "should" be delivered by the end of the month. I'm pretty sure I can get it together in time and do some load development in time for a couple drives in Dec/Jan.

Our late doe season is probably my favorite season. No wondering; IF that's the one, will I see something bigger etc. A lot easier to get permission, great for kids, and just meat in the freezer.

What cartridge is the Nosler M48?
I would take your 300 wm for back up as you are planning on hunting with the 260 closer to home.:)

Savages don’t get the respect they deserve.
I feel that it is true. About 20 or 30 years ago I remember I wanted to buy a custom rifle in the same caliber but with a better stock and longer barrel. The gunsmith asked me the main reason for it and had asked me how far I had shot the rifle. I replied I've only shot milk jugs to 500 yards as it is as far as I shoot. So his reply was you want to pay me a few thousand dollars more to get a rifle to shoot like this Savage does, I'll do it but just know that is pretty impressive shooting for a stock rifle. I never got the custom rifle, the gunsmith made a lot of sense.

Very honest of him. I hope you found another project for him.

Plain old .270Win, with a 130 NAB at 3170 FPS. I've only had it a couple years and it's gotten an 8pt WT and a decent pronghorn buck.

It replaced a Steyr Mannlicher in .270 that I brought back from Germany in 1990. I shot the chit out of that .270 and a couple years ago the accuracy started to degrade. Unfortunately, those Styers are a real PITA, (near impossible) to have re-barreled. Since .270's aren't as popular (not the newest thing) I got the M48 for about $300 less than the cool calibers.

I thing that the .270 is a great caliber, it is my brother's favorite caliber and we always take stabs at each other's caliber. Like anything with the younger generations and they are not wrong with some of their claims, there are better calibers and bullet designs out there and if you are into it fine, but a hammer does a better job of nailing a 2X4 than a 5 pound sledge hammer. It's all about knowing your limitations and the rifle's.

I really like my 7mm Rem Mag Rifle. I wish it was in 300 wsm cartridge. The 300 really doesn't do anything better than 7mm. I have had great success with the 7mm, but I am truly impressed with the 300wsm performance.

I would like to try some of the more recent cartridges in one of the new rifles just for the experience. At ethical hunting distances it won't make any difference over my old 7mm.... just fun to try something new.

I got a 450 BM upper two years ago and shot it only a few times. It has not made it to a real hunt yet, maybe this year. Along those same lines I got a new 45 Colt lever action that may make the trip to the woods this season. Maybe it will be a .45 cal deer season :)

Same stuff I always use although I might ask for a new set of winter boots as an early Christmas present cuz my big rubber lacrosse 12,000 g insulated ones are torn and no longer waterproof. And they're torn right on a seam so it's hard to patch.

Pretty much exclusively with the Jeager, it's been a lucky rifle for me. DSC07207.JPG
I'll take the 1861 out at least once, or more if conditions get real wet. Not that I can't keep the Jeager running in wet conditions, just that sometimes I get too lazy to do so. ! I still have never shot anything with the Springfield.
