Do you have to be 21 to own any NFA weapon? Along with that is it a blanket law for all NFA weapons, or is it different depending on whether it is a FA, SBS, SBR, AOW, or suppressor? Also I am located in Arkansas so any state specific info would be appreciated. I am new here and really enjoy the site, I also did a search before asking this and didn't find what I was looking for :uhoh:. Thanks in advance.

As far as I can remember, there is no age limit to possess other than that of majority (18). However, you can not transfer a NFA item through a FFL unless you are 21. (I believe there is a letter from the ATF floating around confirming this.) So you can build a suppressor or SBR/SBS, but can't buy one from a dealer.

Also, a trust or Corp can technically own the NFA item, so if you are part of one you *might* be able to get around the transfer age if someone above 21 was also part of the trust. They could transfer it into the trust and you could both use it.

**** I am not a lawyer and taking legal advise from someone on the Internet is a bad idea. With that in mid, I am pretty sure that I am correct. (I know, just the thing you want to hear when dealing with felonies… :scrutiny:)

Ok thanks, this was more a question out of curiousity than being something I was about to do so no worries about the legality issue. Thanks for answering.

No problem. I've actually thought about doing the trust route with my family (ie my parents transfer a suppressor into the trust and my whole family can use it) but just decided that it was too much trouble. I'm having a hard enough time convincing him that we need a suppressor for our 10/22, I don't know what he's gona say when he finds out I want to put a micro suppressor on a P7 PSP

I've only got a few more months until I can do it myself though, so I just decided to tough it out and wait until I turn 21.

Yeah, I understand that my family are not really gun people so I wouldn't want to have them mess with all that. I was thinking about trying to build an SBS but I think I am going a different direction with the project anyway :D. Instead of adding even more complications to an already overcomplicated process.

I've never really been interested in SBS'. I think you loose more in mag capacity than you gain in having a short barrel.

Rifles on the other hand could be very useful in a SBR configuration. Call me crazy, but I've always wanted to have a DSA FAL with 13" (or maybe even 11") barrel in .300 WSM with a suppressor hanging off the end to knock off most of the muzzle blast. Yeah, I know. It would have no purpose other than to say I have a cool gun, but if I'm gona spend over $2k on one gun, its at least gona be something interesting!

An easy way to get into the SBR scene is to buy an AR and send off the paperwork, and as soon as it comes back, throw on a SBR upper. You can go from rifle to SBR in as short of time as it takes to punch out a few pins. (Just remember to follow the rules and get the receiver engraved.)

You have to be 21 to purchase from a licensed dealer. If you are making it yourself on a Form 1 or purchasing in a private sale then ATF will approve if you are 18 as long as all other requirements are met. Contrary to popular belief an NFA transfer does not always have to go through a dealer. As long as both parties are residents of the same state ATF will approve private party transfers on a Form 4.

This post nailed it.
