Hey guys wanted to pick some brains. So I have a stripped upper and a 7.5” 5.56 barrel that’s been collecting dust on a shelf for over a year. And finally decided I’m just going to pick up a CMMG conversion kit and turn it into a little training rig. I’m an FFL/SOT so I’ll also be running on my FA lower for fun. But what I’m curious about is could I throw my dead air mask on this, or could a conversion like this cause baffle strikes. Any input is appreciated!

I did some research a year or so ago about a 22LR conversion. One of them and I think it was the CMMG needed an adapter installed in the BCG to make it run FA. The 22LR BCG was not made the same as the M-16 BCG and an inexpensive filler / adapter plate was added to the aft end to make it work FA. Unable to answer on the cans as mine are still in ATF jail.

I'll try the can advice lol. 22LR barrels are typically 1 in 16. Your 5.56 is probably 1 in 7 or 1 in 9 and typically this leads to less than stellar accuracy, not awful just not great. Shouldn't be a problem but I would suggest sticking to a copper washed or jacketed as pure lead is going to be more likely to lead a fast twist and may cause stabilization issues.

Not sure how a CMMG bolt will work in FA.
Here is a picture of a CMMG 22 LR bolt.

The suppressor should work fine.

I’m a CMMG dealer and already have the full auto sear trip kit on order so we are good there. Mainly just concerned with the suppressor. Barrel is a 1/8 twist. Probably just going to toss it on and hope for the best luckily dead air warranty is pretty good so if things go south I should be covered.

I wouldn’t just take anyones word for something so easy to check, certainly wouldn’t just “see what happens”, take the can off and shoot it at paper. If any of the bullets are keyholing, don’t put the can on.
