All of the above. Next to Colt Series 70 Government Models I seem to collect 22 rimfire rifles. I like the older rimfires, mostly bolt guns but there is always room for the Ruger 10/22 and Marlin Model 60 guns. I actually just ordered a new bolt gun which for me "new" is a rare occasion. I should have a CZ 452 LH (Left Hand) by Thursday. I will see how it stacks up against some of my old Remington guns.

Anyway, all 22 rimfires are good, just some more gooder than others.

My answer, to the word. Marlin 39A in 1962.

Now I customize my 10/22, usually Volquartzen parts but a few others in the mix.

Didn't the early guns, before the mid 80s, have an 18 round capacity with the 22 inch barrel? Unless you put some rounds in the magazine tube, chamber a round, then fill the tube to the 18 round capacity for 18 + 1 = 19 rounds? All in all they made around 11 million of those rifles. I have an old Glenfield Model 60 and if I see an old Marlin 60 for a good price I'll take it home.

Recently I have been playing with a few old Remington 510's picked up at estate sales.

The 510P was my first rifle (1958) used from a friend of my uncle. Really like the 510, 511 and 512 rifles. The 510 is a really nice accurate single shot bolt action 22. Enjoy them.

Bought a Marlin 60 in pieces. Got it running again. Fun gun. Load and shoot all day.

I prefer bolt action, but not just any bolt action. I don't enjoy ones with chincy, cheap-feeling actions or sorry triggers. I like shooting CZ bolt actions very much.

I have to admit that I'm guilty of having a blast with all of the above
Now being the lever junky that I am my Marlin 39a is the most fun. That being said my Marlin 60, my Marlin 7000 as well as my Ruger 10-22 see plenty of range time.

Occasionally I borrow my old Glenfield from my oldest son ( it was originally given to me by my dad as a Christmas gift when I was 11 years old now it resides in the hands of my son) I just feels wrong to hunt squirrel on my old family farm with any other rifle.

Hard to go wrong, lots of good choices, but here's my take...

Just plain informal fun? Semi auto like marlin 60 or Henry lever

Serious target work and possible long( for rimfire) range? Bolt such as savage or even better cz.

Target work and fun for guys that need to tinker? 10/22

I like all of them from my single shot Remington 41P to my Ruger 10/22 and Marlin 795. The Henry is fun too, makes me feel like a kid again.

Just for fun: a Henry 001 lever. If needed, I can always 'muddle' through with a Marlin 39.

I couldn't vote. I like them all. 22s are fun no matter what.

Give me a CZ bolt gun, 10/22 semi, and a 9422 lever and I'm good to go. Still need a good pump but they're getting pricy.

I have shot them all. The bolt guns are fine and a good all-purpose choice. The levers are another brand of fun. The semis are yet another brand of fun. And even the single shots have a certain desirability and charm, although it is lost to many.


For me personally, it is actually more important that the gun be tube-fed (if not a single shot). Hence the screen name - sort of, anyway.

Depends what you're trying to do... I've got a pair in the stable right now...

Semi-auto... my 10/22... good for when you want to run through a few mags... I've got mine done up with tech sights and can go through a bulk box in a range outing.

Bolt-action... my CZ99... good for when you want to slow down and breathe... shooting 100 yard targets prone through a 3-9x scope. Good to slow down....

I use both primarily to work with new shooters, but I also have a lot of fun myself with them... I need to get a Henry H001 to round out the stable though.

So to answer the poll... ALL OF THEM!

I love my Henry. I'd love a Marlin 39a, but they're spendy. Given .22 is no longer $10-15 a brick, I'll likely never pay the premium for the premium 39a.
