Well I was a little bored today so I took my 10/22 out to the back yard and I decided to use some CCI CB Long ammo rated at 710fps 29gr round nose. I had a piece of ruled binder paper with a target I drew with a sharpie. The reason I shot at a target 25 yards away is because I am going squirrel hunting on Sunday and wanted to make sure my BSA red dot seems zeroed enough.

Well, I shot from a prone stance with my rifle on a bipod. The shots seemed really in consistent (like 3'' away from each other, 1-2 groups seemed tight.) Anyway to my topic, After removing the paper, I noticed that the bullets were bouncing off of our really old wood fence, only leaving indentions as if it were shooting a strong BB gun at it.

How much energy am I looking at here? 29gr at 710fps has to be like 40lb/ft(?). Is this even considered good for killing squirrels or the rats in my backyard? If it isn't even putting holes in our thin, warped wood fence how can I expect to kill a rodent humanely ?

I didn't want to shoot my mini-mags in the yard because they are not sub-sonic. I have some Rem. 22lr subsonic which I guess will put holes through old wood. But I didn't want to shoot those because I want to save those for hunting and not to mention that in Kali it is ille... :uhoh: I think I hear the black helicopters coming. :cuss:

But for what the ammo is the holes were around my bullseye so I figure my mini-mags will be more accurate and thus my RDS sufficient. Thanks for any input on the weakness of this round.

CB's might kill a rat at 20 feet...for squirrels, you are going to be better off with more powerful ammo (actually depends on the size of the squirrel I guess...we have some pretty darn big fox squirrels around here)

The CB's at 710 fps have 32 ft.lbs of energy. The subsonic ammo will be a tad better...maybe 50 ft.lbs, maybe.

Thanks, those damn rats keep getting into our BBQ and whatnot, nothing better than cornering it, shooting it and if it can still run the weiner-dog chases it down!:D

Well thats the last time I buy ammo from that gun shop. I ask for .22lr and they give me this stuff. Off-topic story, my dad went into the same gun shop awhile back to get some ammo for his crime lab to get the lands and grooves of the bullets. He needed FMJ, and they kept giving him JHP!:banghead: Oh well, thats life, live and learn.

14.5 gr 20 cal pellets from a Sheridan pellet rifle do about the same velocity (750-800 fps) and kill squrriels very well with head shots out to 30+ yds.

most people overrate energy; in Britain for instance, it is almost illegal, without several permits and allowances , to hunt with a airgun, that is over 18fpe.
yet this is what they routinely hunt with, out to about 30 yds, up to rabbit size.
that 29 grain pill will kill them dead as Dillinger, but the prob is what you allready know; Longs are not accurate, and cb's are even worse. to get a cb to group, either you have to be lucky and have a bbl it likes, or you need a faster twist bbl, which will cost you a fortune. there is a possible other fix; if you have an old remmy 550 , speedmaster, fieldmaster, pumpmaster, scoremaster, they may work and group in those, but otherwise you are out of luck, as fas as accuracy goes.
you would be better off with a airgun , 22 cal, going 1000fps.

First, they are not .22 Longs.
.22 Longs have a 29 grain bullet at over 1,000 FPS.

You have Long CB caps.
The are loaded in the long / long rifle length case to prevent chamber fouling and promote better feeding.

They are intended to be low power & quiet for backyard practice & pest control with less risk of ricochets skipping across the countryside.
They are generally way more accurate then you seem to indicate.

They are deadly on squirrel / rabbit size game to at least 30 yards or more. Much further if you can make head shots.

Shooting into a petrified fence post is not a good indication of ammo performance on soft targets like little live furry things.

out of that rifle, you best shot is CCI- try short target. it is rated at about 850 fps. next up would be green tag, pistol match, then shorts, or standard velocity.
these will all be about 1050 fps, and all long rifles, except the plain shorts. In other words, I am trying to get you out of that conical ball shaped 29 grain only round, and back on standard sized/shaped rounds.
Lastly, if you can find them, and if they work, and don't keyhole, you can find
Aguila sniper sss rounds, that are about 950 fps or less, and they use a massive 60 grain chunk of lead, but they can be as iffy as cb's as far as accuracy goes, they also , becuase of their massive size, require a faster twist bbl.
and also like the above post, I have found that the old master series of remmy's will fire these, accurately, and without keyholing; at least out to 50 yds!!!

at 50 yds, longs are rated at 65 fpe , according to CCI.

Sounds like Big E is already breaking the law by firing CB caps in his back yard.

He for sure wouldn't want to be shooting real .22 LR or SSS!
His neighbors might complain to the cops about all the bullet holes in their house!

of course, rcmodel is right here, there is no way I would be shooting anthing that uses powder, in my backyard, unless i had a Re- hee- heally big back yard; those 22 rounds are going to skip around all over the place. that is why I use a airrifle; yes they are way more expensive for a good one, right now the deal of the life time is the new benjamins, that are pcp rifles, and load with both a footpump, or compressed air bottle, or I think even c02. they are about 300 bucks; where you are gonna save money is the ammo, you can get a whole tin of ammo for 5 bucks. Pcp's are the wave of the future right now, for hunting out to 50 yards.
but you could also get a gammo or some such, in 22 cal, doing 1000 fps, and they can be pretty good and accurate, and come with scopes a lot of the times, and are single cock, and will drop anything that comes a calling, into your backyard.

Yeah I feel bad for discharging a firearm in a residential area.

the CCI box says .22 long, but I guess they are caps? I took one apart and only a few flakes of powder fell out. I won't keep buying these, I was just given the wrong ammo. I'll use it till its out, hell, I know I'll go through hundreds of rounds at my friends ranch.

Remington CeeBees pack a little more wollop than the CCI, their listed velocity is 750 FPS, they are a little louder, but they are hollow point and might do a better job on squirrels and such...

I'm still trying to figure out at what point CCI & Remington .22 Longs became CB Caps.

Ten years ago they were .22 Short 29 grain bullets, in LR cases, loaded to very respectable game-killing 1,180 FPS velocity.

In other words, .22 Short Hi-Speed velocity & power, in a longer case to prevent chamber fouling.

A most excellent squirrel & treed coon load that didn't scare the other squirrels away. Or shoot nearly as far as a .22 Long Rifle when shooting up in trees.

Haha :D
I wouldn't discharge anything other than those CB longs. I also made sure I had a backstop (wood fence and cinder block wall) and not shooting towards where anyone would be.

Thank you everyone for your input.
