22 lr ammo not recommended

is it possible to double-charge a .22lr cartridge?

I doubt it, but winchester had some problems with .22 ammo a little while back. Seems that you would have more than one failure in a brick is the wrong powder was used, and I don't think you could double charge...probably weak brass.

Esmith- if you were closer I'd give you a 95% brick of thunderbolts. I will not use them anymore. I tried them out in my Walther P-22 and they worked ok....

Until I noticed there was so much lead residue on the muzzle it looked kinda like icicles but sticking out from the bore.
And I wasn't even done with the first 50rd box!

I use the Federal 550-rd bulk pack from Wal*Mart, I can't even count how many boxes I shot up, with no duds. The "Golden Bullet" (I think it's remington) have lots of duds. The Winchesters in the white box, arggg.. talk about crap. The CCI were great!

I've bought all the bulk packs at Wally World in the past year or so. So far the Federals are the worst for me, but I'm new at this rimfire failure stuff. Until this year, I never had a failure. So far, the Win Xperts and Rem stuff is also good, not that it won't fail, just that it hasn't for me yet. The Federal stuff was disappointing to say the least, but I hadn't had to spend any money on rimfire in the last several years. I've even had bricks of T-bolts and Wildcats with nary a failure, but of course that was years ago. It must be different now.

I only have one .22LR gun right now, a Stevens 300 bolt gun. Its essentially the same as the Savage MkII from what I can tell. I shot 50rds of Winchester SuperX (gray box, right?) that the salesman threw in with the rifle. Since then its been Federal Bulk hollow points. The only issue I've found so far is fail to extract. sometimes I have to pry the brass out of the chamber. don't know why it gets so stuck in there. I clean the rifle after every range trip.

Never had that happen to me. And like esmith thunderbolts are very accurate for me. Groups easily under a nickel at 50 yards. That is great for a $50 marlin .22 and the tasco that the guy gave me with it.

I tried that Winchester Xpert (Expert?!?) ammunition once when I first tried all kinds of 22LR ammo.

I bought several 'name' brands in all price ranges.

I think that type of ammunition was absolutely horrible!

I have had NO problems with Federal 22LR bulk pack and other brands in my firearms - rimfire and centerfire handguns and rifles.

I've never really ran into any bad 22 ammo( 1 or 2 failers per 1000) ... just dirty. There use to be this company that sold 100 rounds in chewing tabacco containers... now that was some dirty stuff.

I think that stuff was called spit-fire or something like that. It was dirty.
Worst I've ever seen was this Russian "Surok" stuff with an aluminum case.

Overall, I've had good luck with .22 ammo. I stick mostly with Federal bulk pack JHP for plinking, Federal American Eagle 40 grain LRN when I want to go a little more expensive, and CCI mini mag's when I really need reliable .22 ammo.

If it does not work in my SAs I don't buy any more and use them in the bolt guns. Some of the softer point garbage won't even chamber in the bolt guns so they go in the revolvers.

Scrat, I have no idea what you said in your original post. Others seemed to have figured it out.

You almost always have some duds in the bulk packs.

Winchester Xpert is garbage.

all of the rounds the bullets are loose. You can pull them out with your fingers the lead is very soft. You can even rotate the lead. In an autoloader they jam up as the bullet tips wiggle. This may be ok for a single shot but its garbage. Then there were too many ftf.

Your right others have figured it out. Look how many people say its garbage. Like i wrote i think i will be sticking to federal.

The lead bulk pack .22 I only shoot out of revolvers and fixed action rifles. For semi-autos, I just shoot the copper wash, preferably, CCI Mini Mag.

And I wasn't even done with the first 50rd box!

They (Rem, T-bolts) weren't that bad for me/my wife, but they leaded up the barrel of her Bersa Firestorm so bad it was keyholing at 7 yards. When we got it home and she went to clean the gun she got a brass bush stuck about halfway down the barrel. I had to literally hammer the brush out. Never again.

I've got a bakers dozen 22's now, and I find the Federal bulk packs from Wally World to work good in all of them. It's probably not the "best" in any of them, but it's good enough in all of them.

Yup! That Remington Bulk Pack stuff is junk. It misfires probably 4 out of 20 in any of my .22s.

The best deal going right now is the Federal Bulk Back of 550 rounds. It's 13.97 for 550 rounds at Wal-Mart, and the misfire rate is something like 3 out of 500 for me right now.

I expect misfires from rimfire ammo, it just goes with the territory. However, the Remington bulk pack .22 LR doesn't really do it for me. Too many misfires.

The CCI Stinger stuff's not bad, just pricey for .22 LR ammo.

I must agree that Winchester's Expert is a poor performer, at least in my CZ 452 American. I've had good luck with Federal's Champion 510 and 710 loads and Winchester DynaPoints.

I don't know that the flyers are the ammos fault. Could be the wind and it could be me being sloppy.

Remington has gained a reputation of being bum ammo. Snake, a shooter on Rimfire Central, says that he's found it's getting better, especially the Gold Bullet.

Wolf MT is more expensive than I'm will to spend for casual shooting, but it's among the best.

The Remmy GB's are the only bulk pack ammo that will work in my P22 ever single time. Not even the great Auto Match that I'm fond of for it's price and performance. :(

I wish this thread had been posted a few days earlier!

I've been using the Federal 550 from Walmart, and never had a misfire. Bought some of both the Winchester and Remmington just to try different types. Used the Remmington on Saturday. I had 7 misfires in 100 rounds. I'm new to shooting, so these misfires surprised and confused me. Naturally, I assumed I was doing something wrong or that my pistol was malfunctioning. I tried some of the Federal I had with me, and no more misfires.

I haven't tried the Winchester yet... But if they wiggle, I'm going try the paperweight idea.

As annoying as bad ammo is, it's helpful to know others have had the same issue.

Interesting. Xpert shoots GREAT out of my gun, I do not have ANY problems with it.. More reliable than the Fed 550 boxes that I get at walmart and it only costs 50 cents more at this point... Another thing thats horrible is the thunderbolts and golden bullets but the rem subsonics is great stuff.. CCI blazers are OK but bleh.. AE does good with me as well.

Tried Xperts in my AA .22 Glock conversion. EVERY SINGLE round fails to extract and has to be pushed out with a cleaning rod.:banghead:

With "Golden Bullets" however, I can rip through magazine after magazine without a problem.

I concur with the opinion on Thunderbolts and the HORRIBLE leading they produce.

I never found out if Remington Thunderbolts would lead my guns. They WOULD NOT FIRE reliably in 3 guns. Oh, the first time I thought it was just a bad brick (it came with a girlfriend's gun). Bought more, same thing. No Remington rimfire for me.

I've had very good luck with the Federal bulk packs at Wal-Mart, I've gone through three bricks so far, I probably get 1 dud per brick and they are pretty accurate. I'm shooting a Ruger 22/45 by the way, the Federal ammo runs great for me, even at $11.97/550 rounds, its still a really good deal.

For bulk ammo I've had much better luck with federal. Next is Win. with Remington getting the much deserved last place.

It appears that everyone has had good and bad expierence with every type of ammo out there. I think its more about the gun than the ammo being used.
