In the thread I started about the usefulness of a 22 LR as survival rifle, I was impressed by the test results of this guy

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=503007#Post503007

To sum it up, the guy tested a standard velocity 22 LR round (Wolf Match Target at 1050 fps) against a turkey wrapped in clothing (6 layers) on a very windy day at distances between 250 and 300 yards.

He was able more or less to consistently to hit the target and some of the bullets went completely through the "dressed" turkey exiting at the back of the target.

Given this rather remarkable results, it is believable, as some people claim, that the CCI Velocitor (HP 40 gr. 1435 fps), the Stinger (HP 32 gr. 1640 fps) and the Aguila Interceptor (HP 40 gr. 1470 fps) can inflict serious damage to an animal up to the size of a coyote at 100-150 yards??

Yotes are notoriously hard to drop (the son of my gunsmith blew a hole you could literally put your arm through on a coyote with a 257 Roberts, still the fellow required tracking and a finishing shot with a Mini 14), still some folks claim DRT results with the hypervelocity 22 LR ammo at reasonable ranges.

The 22 Long Rifle, traditionally, has never be really a coyote round, but some of the modern offering seems to have made the leap.

Any member with experience on this??

Regards

Mmm, on Coyote, much past 50 yards and a head shot and I wouldn't take it. Oh, it'll kill with heart lung shot, just prefer to do it as quick as possible. My minimum would be my .22 mag with CCI maxi mag at around 2000 fps. Shoots flat to 100 yards and is 1.5 MOA accurate.

As far as .22, use what's accurate. Don't worry a lot over the energy that isn't there. I'd probably go with stinger or mini mag in my 10/22 and about anything in my very accurate old Remington bolt gun. I don't think I'd see any real difference in performance except between .22 mag and .22 LR.

Well, 400 fps of difference between the standard velocity and the hypervelocity will account for something energy wise...

I have taken dozens of coyotes with velocitors, and about 20 minutes ago an enormous coon.

Never had any problems

that coon was anchored. heart / lung shot fell from the tree deader than a doornail not even a twitch.

At what distances?? Did they do significant damage?? Any pass through??

I'd use the stingers. My cousin kills coyotes with his 10/22 i'm fairly sure he uses stingers. They seem like a great round for pretty much anything.
