22 RIMFIRE VARMINT RIFLE SCOPE

I'm putting together a 22 lr bolt gun for CA ground squirrels. I have a Leupold 4 1/2- 14 on my 17 HMR and Nikon 6 1/2 - 20 on my 223, and 22-250.

Ouestion is: what magnification does one use when shooting between 20 and 100 yards?
Also, what quality of optics are are adequate for a 22 rimfire?

I have a 3x9 Sightron on mine, and am very pleased with it.

I limit most of my .22 LR shots to 100 yards. I use a .22 mag with a 4.5x14 Burris for more range.

One useful thing on rimfires is AO that works up close. Bushnell Elites are very good scopes that focus down 10 yards. The Elite 4200 4-16x is a terrific combination. Adjust AO to ten yards, has 4x on the low end, and 16x on the high end making it very useful over a wide variety of conditions. It is a long scope, but you get used to the look of that in a short time.

I've got a number of gopher guns in .22lr. I'd presume that our Montana ground squirrels aren't that much different from the one's in California except our's are probably a little more conservative.

I'm using a Sightron S1 3-9X rimfire on a Ruger 10/22. Using a Weaver 4-16X FCH A/O on a Volquartsen 10/22. Using a Simmons 4-12X on a Ruger 77/22, Using a Bushnell Legend 5-15X A/O mil-dot, on another gun and a Nikon 3.3-10X A/O mil-dot on yet another .22lr

I kinda get into shooting gophers.

I have a Nikon ProStaff Rimfire 4x32 - not too expensive - like $100

Its my first scope - guy at the counter recommended against a variable power.

After a few range trips, I consistently hit the maybe 2" diameter reactive target - every time, with several different grades of ammo.

Seems the counter dude was right on.

I have 3-9x Tasco Pronghorn on my Marlin 60, and can shoot tiny groups at 50 yards, and real good ones at 75...But at 100 I find 9x just not quite enough for small targets(or groups)... IMHO your choices are 3-9x or 4-12x...

P.S. you can see that I like variables... I like be able to use the lower settings for the larger field of view, but prefer the higher magnification for those opportunities where I have time to get into a really good shooting position. Call it "mini-sniping"if you will.

Had it out today - 1" groups at about 100 yards from a makeshift rest.

Kids can consistently make the spinners spin with it at 50 yards.

Ah c'mon Dave, take it easy on us poor old buggers who's eyes aren't what they used to be. Not trying to flame, but I do have a difference of opinion with your opinion. There really are some legitimate uses and needs that call for more than 4X glass on a .22 rimfire.
