.22 Single Shot Club?

This spring I stopped by the local gun shop and while glancing at the used rack, I saw something I couldn't believe.... a price tag that said "$35". As the cheap@$$ I am, I could not turn down a $35 rifle and promptly purchase the JC Higgins .22 bolt action single shot.

I took it to the range just to see if it fired and it turned out to be a lot more fun than I anticipated. It's simplicity reminds me of being a kid with my first pellet gun. It is very relaxing to sit at the bench and plink away with. It now comes to the range with me every time I go.

Like so many my age, my first gun was a Winchester Model 67 that probably set my dad back under twenty dollars. Received it at age fourteen for Christmas in 1957. I've had a hundred or so firearms since then and still have quite a few but none so irreplaceable as that little Winchester .22. This post has inspired me to take it off the rack and renew an old acquaintance. Eventually, of course, it will go to one of my grandsons.

I think this thread deserves a revive....from he dead. (becasue I thought of making a singleshot thread club but found this)

the winchester 67a I own is at least 3x as old as I am and it can still outshoot me. heck, it may even outlast me even though I'm young.

hopefully I can get some pics but there isnt much to show on a no frills 1/4 moa rifle

My grandfather might have bought this Savage Model 3B in the late 1930s. What does the small encircled "18" behind/below the rear sight on the left side designate?

The bore is still pretty bright, despite being kept in an attic for many years.
Shooting it reduces some of the 'appetite' for more costly ammo, and it goes to the river as a 'first course' for the other rifles.

The Savage was leaning against a bush a week ago, and when a dumb raccoon started to climb the rifle with his sandy paws, I swatted the rude animal's head with my floppy cap.

I like my single shot .22's I have three...Rem. 510. a Savage mod 24...22/410 and a Savage mod 72.

I think its the best fun just slow plinking and poking fun at each other about that last missed shot.

IMHO everyone should learn the proper technique using a single shot 22 lr.
Mine's a 1969 Anschutz, bought it used for the price of a panful bacon and eggs.

my first and only single shot : Marlin 100G. its my go to squirrel and rabbit gun. still shoots 1/4 inch groups if i will do my part.
