A buddy who knows me well recommended a .22 snub nose revolver to me. LR or WMR. He personally recommended a Charter Arms Pathfinder. Cheap, good warranty. Anyone out there besides Charter make a snub nose steel frame .22LR/WMR ?

*Yes, I am so poor as to seriously consider .22LR/WMR for SD

Ruger makes a little 8 shot 22lr. Probably more expensive than Charter or Taurus though.

edit: sorry just saw OP said steel frame. The Ruger is one of those super light frames.

If I had to rely on a .22 snub, it would have to be an 8 or 9 shot revolver. H&R did make 9 shot .22's, but I can imagine finding one in good condition is going to be a challenge. So, I'd stick with that Taurus, the allegedly soon to come Charter, Ruger LCR, or a used S&W.

I think the LCR is the better revolver of them all, but IDK if it's worth double what Charter and Taurus will cost. For a gun that uses a polymer grip frame, I have to wonder why the LCR costs so much.

I checked Taurus and Charter for you. I also recommend Charter because their Warranty is better , almost as good as the leader S&W IMHO. Of all the Charter snubs this one wound my clock. Enough so that I may buy one myself. It is a .22 Mag which has considerably more omph than the .22lr , which you need in a 2" barrel! I have a North american Arms side winder in 2" but this is far more useable as a field revolver. It only weighs 12 .oz ! That is what you want in snubbie IF the cartridge chosen doesnt have much recoil and the .22 Mag doesn't. I know nothing about this vendor but seems straight up Shipping at $25 is cheap and he is established and has the best price for this model out of 10 pages of them on GB .

Use this ammo = 1050 out of 2" barrel with a full 40 grain bullet that expands. Nickle cases too . It expands in my Northamerican Arms 1 5/8" barrel.

Bud's Gun has the Pathfinder (Mdl No. 72224) for $308.

Contact Charter Arms directly. They started producing an 8 shot .22 Pathfinder again. The dealers might be trying to offload their 6 shooters.

This is model
CHARTER-52370 I think
Buds is $322 for that model :

Now that is a 5 shot model ! Apparently there is a 6 shot model that Bud's has at the $322 price. Maybe you could pull the old "price match" option they have and get the 6 shot one for $308 :)

Taurus small frame 22s are for me a no-go. A lot of them we had to send back for timing issues and most needed a trigger job. Older ones were pretty good. Ruger SP101 is as solid as you'll find. Mine was dead accurate but two trips to the 'smith couldn't get the trigger under 8# single action and my SP 357 is butter smooth. Charter is o.k. but look hard for a used Smith 34 or 63. Won't be cheap but none better exists.

UH oh !

My Uncle gave me his Pathfinder when he knew he was headed for the nursing home shortly. He thought it was a convertible but if so, he could not find the Magnum cylinder and it did not turn up in his estate.
I was shooting it today; we are having a BUG match and I was using it to practice for the J frame.

I agree, look for a used S&W 34 or 63. You can't go wrong.

I have a 9 shot Taurus model 94. It's a 22lr. I've heard horror stories about their triggers but mine isn't that bad. Not a bad choice if you can find one. 9 rounds of 22lr in a double action ain't a bad thing to have on your hip.

5.jpg I have two Ruger's... a LCR22WMR and a 3"LCRx22WMR that are dependable shooters. The trigger pull is a bit stout, but that's pretty common in rimfire revolvers. I like the LCRx for its adjustable rear sight that allows me to dial it in for the specific ammo I'm using. The additional 1-1/8" of length allows it to harness more of the magnum load.

I had a 3" Taurus model 94 at one time. Really nice gun that I could shoot the flame off a candle with a around 7-8 yards. (I also shot several candles in half two). But that little 22 round from that gun felt like the weakest round I had ever shot. Compared to my Ruger standard model with a 4" barrel the Taurus felt like a pellet gun. A 32 long from a 2" barrel feels like a magnum in comparison.

Quick question here since a few others and myself have mentioned the Taurus 942... does anyone know if it's the same frame as the Taurus 85 or 856? I ask because it appears that Pachmayr is making their Guardian Grips to fit the 85 and 856 and I had long considered the LCR instead because those Guardian Grips would fit it.
