I encounter .22 rimfire rifle owners on a regular basis who tell me they have a .22 rifle that's a real "tack driver". So, that got me to thinking about having an event at our local gun club whereby owners could engage their .22 "tack driver rifles" on this target that I came up with:

I printed out a bunch of these targets on tagboard target paper that I bought from Amazon, and then tried some of my .22 rifles out on my range out back. I was shooting at 35 meters, although anyone can try this at whatever distance you choose.
It did create a very fun event for those who partook of the challenge. We did limit rifles to those of the sporter/hunting type and scope settings at 7 power, to try and keep things somewhat equal.
Feel free to print these targets out and try your favorite tack driver .22 rimfire rifle out. Would like to see posts of your end result.

I used to shoot a no holds barred local rim fire match at 50 yards using ARA targets. The bullseye is about the size of a dime. Hitting the head of a tack in one try is much easier said than done. It is a lot of fun for some and frustrating for others when they shoot at a target like yours and find that they’d be better off using a hammer to drive those tacks.

What size are the targets?

Too easy. Finishing nails would be waaaay more impressive. Especially since most people wouldn't even be able to see them. I have shot roofing nail heads at 25 yards and did ok. Primers on empty 12 gauge hulls was beyond my ability.

A tack at 50 yards. . . that's something like 0.7MOA. For a rimfire rifle, that's really impressive.

Tell me about it. It's amazing what a 10 mph gust of wind will do to a 40gr .22 projectile at 50 yards. I shot a 40X in a McMillan stock (I believe it was) with a Shilen barrel and Weaver 32X fixed power scope. During that match, you would hear more cursing than you would at a bar on a Saturday night.

Standard operating procedure for a Savage...

Yeah, tend to agree. Both of my Savage MkII rifles can do that but so can my Marlin 917BVSS and my Savage A17 Target, 25 or 50 yards. The Kansas wind though ---- :( . If I have a good ammo lot, it is possible for me to say the Marlin is the most accurate rifle I have ever owned or even seen as it has shot through the same hole at 100 yards, three rounds off bench in an indoor range, more than once. If it does not, then it is me. I have seen some skilled shooters with high end target .22 rifles do similar. Any Savage MkII at 50 yards, SOP.

I only drove 1 "tack" with a bullet- after a guy I worked with overseas as a contractor had zeroed his M40, he said he was going to shoot the nail holding the target to the frame and he blew it. I fired 1 round through his rifle at it and sent that nail to who knows where and the target fell off the frame. Everyone freaked when I did it (I was surprised too) but I said that I wouldn't have said I could do it if I couldn't. Of course someone told me to do it again and I said no, I don't need to do it again- you do it once. Of course it jinxed everyone and no one else could do it.
