Hi guys. Until now I have been using Varget as my fav load for my .223 CZ 527, generally for 100/200 yards paper shooting. I have now bought a tub of RE 7 to try, Lymans 49th doesnt give a load for this powder,I also have the latest Sierra manual which says 20.6 grns starting load,up to 23.6 max, which means `Why is he asking this question`Well when I looked up these loads on Quickload 21.6 grains was firmly in the RED.I realise Quickload is not absolutely accurate but it sure has made me think, Who do I believe,I know I must work up the load, but even the start load from Sierra`s manual is pretty close to the max from Quickload::confused:

Not sure what you plugged into QL, but one of us is doing something wrong. Here is my QL calculations with the Generic case capacity of 28.8gr of H20.

    Code:
    Cartridge : .223 Rem. (SAAMI)
    Bullet : .224, 53, Sierra HP MK 1400
    Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.260 inch or 57.40 mm
Barrel Length : 18.0 inch or 457.2 mm
    Powder : Alliant Reloder- 7

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 2.0% of nominal charge.

Steve, I have double checked my q/load result,it still shows 21.6 in the red, even so. Sierra book tells me max 23.6,,which even on your q/load is a very dangerous load. 21.5 on my quickload is max,(purple) I am working on 2.26 max OAL, I also measured my case volume, which is a new case, with a old primer pushed in,it measured 29.9 grains h2o.which should to my thinking lower the pressure. If I follow Sierra`s load,21.6 starting load it would be dangerous according to quickload, maybe I should continue with Varget

sorry,I can`t show my readings as my q/load will not run on windows 7,I have to run it via a virtual drive, which isolates it from the rest of my PC

Alliant says 20.5 RX-7 is MAX with a 52 grain Speer.

I tend to believe they might be in the ballpark.

yes RC I tend to agree. I think a good safe starting load for me will be 19 grains.well below what Sierra recommends I dont rely too much on quickload, but it sure has been accurate this time

Two things, First,I think you may be plugging in different info than I. Second, I do not think R-7 is a good choice for the 223,YMMV. I like powders that are a little slower than R-7 in my 223/5.56, but I'm shootin an AR so I need the slower powders for increased Port pressure. My go to powder is AA 22130/ X-T for 55 gr bullets.

Steve, I plugged in the exact info as you did,OAL 2.26, case volume 28.8 grn H2O,53 GRN Sierra matchking. my readings are still well above yours, still showing 21.6 grn in the red,I think theres something wrong with one or the other program'
I am going to trust my instinct and start very low, work up as far as I can and report back

What version of QL are you running? I am running 3.4 with the 3.5 Update.

Just checked my notes, I use 21.4 reloader 7 with sierra 52gr match in both my AR and Savage model 12, no signs of problems.

My sierra print out as stated earlier on another post gives 19.6 start load with a 22.4max. using either 52 or 53 sierra match, Sierra recommended these for the AR15.

Gave excellent results in the AR very mild recoil and accurate. I always start out with suggested beginning load.
