any of you guys ever bought any of the "once fired" brass lots from amazon.com? i just happened to be cruisin' around on amazon and saw this brass on there. it's of course a little cheaper than name brand, i'm not sure how important that is, but i was curious as to the quality of it or if it's not worth the trouble........500 pieces for $68. Look on the for sale/trade here in the trading post section. I think you will find some great deals. Also I am a member of Gun Broker and buy brass there. You can Google used 223 brass and get a ton of hits there also. Most brass should be 1/2 the price or less of new as a rule. The more prep work done to it the higher the cost BTW. Used military brass will have crimped primers and need the primer pockets reamed before the new primers can be inserted. Some price comparison will save you some serious $$$. Fired brass can be sent through the USPS at flat rates and IMHO that is your best shipping option. Using EBAY could get your account locked if you buy firearms related products so beware.

You have to be carefull. I ordered up some GI 223 brass one time and got stuck with 1k of Federal 223 brass, The stuff sucked for my match tuned service rifle. I would suggest buying only from GI brass.

does all .223 brass have crimped primers? i saw some on amazon for a great price but fearful of buying it because of the primers being crimped. i don't mind spending the money for good brass, but want to make sure that i'm not cutting off my nose despite my face!! so, if all .223brass has crimped primers then fine, but i'd rather just load it like i load for my .300 ( tumble, clean the primer pockets, lube, size, seat the primer, charge the case, seat the bullet )

Not all brass is crimped, where you typically find crimped primer pockets is military type ammo. Lake City, FC (Federal) and WCC (Winchester) there are others but these 3 types are the ones I'm most fimiliar with and all usually have crimped primers. All the commercial brass ( the type you would buy for hunting etc.) do not have a crimp, this is the type that you just de-prime resize & load.
There are alot of us on right here on THR who sell 1X fired brass of all types, most of the time at better prices than anywhere else. Just make sure you get a good description of what your buying and check the Feedback for the seller.

good info. and thanks. so, what all is involved or what extra steps come into play when reloading brass that has crimped primers that need to be deprimed before loading? this is all new to me, i've only loaded 300 win mag. and 9mm thus far.......thanks again for the help guys.....hvychev77

You need to remove the rolled or staked edge of the pocket -- that's the crimp.
There are several tools, such as the RCBS type that mounts on a heavy-duty single stage press, or this gadget from Dillon -

If you don't want to do it yourself you could just buy twice fired GI brass.
I have 400 pieces of mixed .223 and 5.56 brass I'd like to sell and would sell it for a lot cheaper than that on Amazon. Some of it has primer pocket crimps, but some of it doesn't. I got it with some other brass and have no use for it. If interested let me know, and maybe we could work something out.

If you check out the link I included before, you will find you can get GI brass with the crimp removed and processed, sizing, polished, crimp removed, etc ready for priming and loading.
I don't mind the crimp because I shoot 223, 308, 30-06 rifles and 45 ACP pistol's. GI brass is cheap. when I swage, I also uniform the primer pocket. This only needs to be done once in the life time of the brass.

thanks for all the info. and pm's guys. i got a hook up today with a guy at work who's gonna get me some free 1x fired brass, and i ran across some at a "reasonable" price at my local gun store. I need to get the items to swage the primer pockets and i'm all set. thanks again for all the help and links to more info. cheers, hvychev77

Not all Federal is crimped.
I have some Federal factory 223 ammo that's not crimped.
I also have some Wolf brass & Pri Partizan brass that is crimped.
It depends on the ammo that it came from.
If the original ammo was 5.56x45 then it has a crimp.
If the original ammo was 223 Remington, then it's not crimped.
It's almost impossible to just go by the headstamp.

I recently acquired a number of .223 and 5.56 brass from a fellow THE-er. There was a lot of variety, including some headstamped .223 REM that were crimped. You just never know with calibers that double as military and civilian rounds.
