I'm reloading a batch of 223 Hornady 68gr HPBT, 25.8gr of Varget, and 2.26" OAL. This is a compression load and I am getting a ring of bullet deformation when seating the bullet. I am currently using RCBS small base 223 dies and was wonder if the RCBS competition seater plug will fit my dies and solve the issue?

Polish the edge of the seater plug you have now. Just enough to take the sharp edge off and smooth the inside a bit. Chuck it in a drill and use 400 and 600 grit.

Jared ... ran into this same thing last week with the same bullets and powder .... I did as Walkalong told you to do and it remove all but a faint line ... I have to revisit the drill and sand paper again ... but I went from an almost cut to a faint line with just a little time in the drill and with the paper ...

While I've set up specialized seater plugs using the JB-Weld method* for my very soft/heavy
45 slugs in the Sharps and Rolling Blocks, I think I'll try out your sandpaper concept on the
Lubrisizer top punch on these babies:

To answer your question no, the seater plugs are not interchangeable. I would try as Walkalong suggested for starters.

Taking the sandpaper to the inside of the seater seems to have done the trick. Maybe being a little deformed still, but not to an amount that I care. Thanks!

Even better, chuck up the seater stem in a drill, hold bullet in a vice grip, add some lapping compound to mix.

Now that sounds like a good idea. What grit lapping compound would you use?

Lapping compound was the ticket. Bullet is no longer being deformed from the compression. Thanks!
