Trying to find a load for my Colt LE6920 that duplicates the Hornady Superformance.

So far I tried CFE 223 but couldn't get within 200 fps of the factory ammo. The loads actually felt wimpy but I can't find any data for the Hornady and the mentioned powder. I managed 2500 fps with 25.0 gr.

Anyone got other choices for powder that may give more velocity?

I guess the first question to you is "What velocity are you getting with factory Superformance ammo"?

Next question would be, is your rifle a 223 or a 5.56?

Last, what is your barrel length?

Superformance has gotten 2750 from my M4 with 16" barrel and this is a 5.56.

My question would be, why is High Velocity so important to you?

Most of the Higher Velocity Loads i have made tend to be LESS accurate than a Lower velocity load i made

Over 37 years of reloading I've always found that accuracy occurs very close to the max charge in every rifle cartridge I've reloaded. There are always exceptions but I have never found them.

The reason for wanting to duplicate the speed of superformance is I have 3000 rounds of superformance. It just makes sense to duplicate it if I can.

Its my understanding that the super performance and the old light magnum ammo use proprietary powders not available in canister grade. You might have trouble matching that velocity. But you can always keep trying.

Like #2 I use Varget in my heavy .223 loads. I've never chrono'd them so I don't really know how fast they are. I like accuracy and that they are...

I'm not so sure the canister powder can't be matched. I've done a lot of work with Varget and may give that a try, even have Benchmark.

Varget at 26.0 gr and the Nosler 69 gr .224 bullet was the most accurate combination I've ever shot.

I also wonder about CFE 223, at 25.0 gr it feels whimpy compared to the Hornady ammo. But I can find no load data for the 75 gr Hornady or 5.56 showing a higher charge. Steve4102 hit on it, 5.56 is loaded to higher pressure.

R15, Varget, Benchmark, AA2230 will take a Hornady 75gr to 2900-3000fps in a 20in barrel. Many factory loads that use the 75gr Hornady BTHP match bullet are much slower, like 2750fps in 20-24in barrel. Work up from min to max in .3gr increments and stop when you have pressure issues or find the sweet spot for accuracy.

Your 6920LE is 16in. Knock about 100-200fps off the factory load velocities. They are usually rated at 24in barrel.
Great gun. A female friend has one.

I like ball powders when shooting 69 to 75 grain bullets in .223.
