Hey guys,
When did the panic for 22s officially kick in?

Most of the other products, 9mm and 223 ammo, powder, etc, kind of had different start times and I was just curious if 22s were the same. I remember in what I would probably call "mid panic" I could still get pistol powder...it seemed to go all unobtainable in about the 3rd trimester of the panic:)-or the backstretch. IIRC, 9mm ammo and such was one of the first to go all crazy.. It was back to near normal when pistol powder scarcity kicked in. When did 22s hit the crazy button?

December of 2012 is when it kicked in. I purchased a boat load of Aguila from Graf's sometime in mid December for around $18 per brick and they had no limit. This was within a day of the time I realized that something was about to happen with 22. The shortage of 22 caught me by surprise but I had over 20k on hand so i survived. Maybe a week before that I bought a good bit of Blazer from a LGS in GA for about the same price and, again, no limit.

Can't really tell ya (I'm sure others in here will), but this is at least the 2nd 22 panic?

Got a relative that's a gunsmith / competitive shooter - he always has a lot of everything he shoots on hand - he told me he sat out the previous 22 panic, and stocked up again when it was over - he's now sitting out the current panic.

I just got into 22 within the last year or so - I've always kept enough inventory to avoid panics / shortages, but got blindsided by the current 22 shortage since I'm a latecomer to the caliber.

Remember this place called Sandy Hook? That and the political fallout from that kicked off the panic.

.22lr is just taking a lot longer to recover than the rest

.22lr Shortage or Panic

Actually the shortage began in 2008, and continued on until the Sandy Hook massacre in Dec. 2012 , which gave it a big boost, but appears to be lessening now.

Thanks. I didn't know if it kicked off right at Sandy Hook, or if it took awhile after that.

I made a offer on some .22LR a guy had for sale locally. He said he 'had to sell it' but he paid a certain amount so he 'couldn't sell for less than that.' Since he couldn't make up his mind I made it up for him and as far as I know he's still got it.

The 22LR situation is a quagmire of people not understanding that the economy isn't about them.

Basically, it's Remmy's/etc's fault for not noticing the ungodly numbers of 10-22's & etc. being pumped out over the last decade and increasing production in kind. They probably assumed "the same number of gun owners were just buying more guns" as that stupid refrain goes.

This is not news.

20 or 30 million shooters wanting to stock 3 or 4 bricks of rimfire each is a desire that requires 30 to 60 billion rounds to satiate. If domestic ammo makers are turning out 8 million rounds daily in a standard 5 day work week, it'll take at least 15 years to catch up.

And yet.... so many here say it doesn't make sense to add more factories because this is just temporary.

^^ The numbers are staggering. But economics will prevail, and supply will increase as our system of capitalism sense there's profit to be had by building more production capability. The problem is in infrastructure lead time, and in the meanwhile... <sigh>... it is what it is.

I didn't even notice it until a full century had gone by. Guess I don't shoot enough of it...

I think it's great to look on gunbroker, and see no bids on the .22 ammo on there. I hope everyone selling it overpaid for it, and has to eat the crow.

I thought that video clip of the CCI production line said they make 8 million per day. If that is correct, you need to take account of the other manufacturers in your math work.

Was just in our Wal-Mart on Miami Blvd. They will also be holding 22 in order to sell it this Saturday. They are billing it as a hunting season sale. I don't know if they will continue the policy part this Saturday. The clerk said they are getting in a big shipment today or tomorrow.

Besides, it's only hoarding when the other guy does it.

The haves vs the have nots.

The have nots frequently believe the haves do not deserve their stuff/acquired it unfairly/don't need it...which is one of the reasons we have guns.
